Phil Parkinson shares what Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds said ‘straight away’ after recent Wrexham defeat

Wrexham continue to push for another promotion under Phil Parkinson and sit in a promising position right now.

Back-to-back promotions was already an incredible achievement for Wrexham, but it could get even better.

Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon with Jay Rodriguez scoring the only goal of the game.

Rodriguez was praised by Paul Merson as he reacted quickly to his saved penalty, firing home his first Wrexham goal.

That result leaves Wrexham second in the League One table, three points ahead of Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe do have a game in hand on Wrexham though with the race for League One promotion potentially going to the very end of the season.

Phil Parkinson on Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham are in a great position right now but there could still be twists and turns to come.

Parkinson wants his Wrexham players to stay focused, fully aware that there could be some difficult days before the season ends.

Wrexham were beaten 2-0 at Reading earlier in March and, in truth, never really got going in Berkshire.

That was a testing defeat for Wrexham and Parkinson has now opened up on what Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds said to him after the game.

Speaking to TalkSPORT, Parkinson admitted that McElhenney and Reynolds messaged him asking if there was anything they could to help the Wrexham cause.

Parkinson only wanted a video message to the squad with McElhenney and Reynolds showing their appreciation for the players.

Parkinson added that McElhenney and Reynolds have been great at stepping up when things don’t go well, helping pull everybody together.

“Rob and Ryan have been brilliant, we got beat at Reading last week, you get those along the way and straight away next day both of them messaged me, ‘anything you need us to do, any help we can give you’. Which is great,” said Parkinson.

“You know when you lose as a manager you know it’s like it doesn’t matter where you are in the league.

“I said to Rob and Ryan I think just a nice little video message for the boys before the Wycombe game, just about ‘ten games to go lads, you know you’ve done great’.

“There’s a bit of a supportive message because they’ve not been over for a short while so they did that and just little things like that help you know because it’s not all on the manager. It’s so when we win everyone takes the plaudits but it’s important as well when it doesn’t go as well that everyone pulls together around you and Rob and Ryan have been great at that,” he added.

Ryan Reynolds could see his wish come true

Wrexham have just eight games to go and a third straight promotion is within touching distance.

That is exactly what Reynolds is seeking – and he made that clear in April of last year.

Reynolds vowed to go ‘for broke’ in search of another promotion, admitting that going up another level was the only thing on his mind.

Wrexham splashed the cash on Sam Smith in January, shattering the club’s transfer record in the process.

Reynolds was being serious about going for broke in search of promotion and this is the ideal position; second with just eight games left.

Paul Merson loves Wrexham’s final fixtures but the game is not played on paper and Wrexham must get the job done on the pitch in order to become a Championship club.
