Phil Parkinson shares why he has named Callum McFadzean in Wrexham squad

Wrexham have confirmed that defender Callum McFadzean is taking the final spot in the squad for the rest of the season.

Wrexham only named 21 outfield players in the squad back in February.

This was an intentional plan; Wrexham wanted to leave the spot open for the returning Anthony Forde or Callum McFadzean.

There was one other option – the signing of a free agent.

Phil Parkinson seemed to hint at a midfielder potentially arriving in February amid injury problems in his engine room.

When no signing arrived, it became clear that the final spot in the Wrexham squad would go to Forde or McFadzean – and that decision has now arrived.

Wrexham announce Callum McFadzean decision

Parkinson told The Leader that McFadzean would be added to the squad – and believes the he ‘will be ready’ whenever called upon.

The Wrexham boss added that McFadzean has been training ‘really well’, hence the decision to give him that final spot.

“I have put Callum in the 22,” said Parkinson. “It is difficult when you are not in the squad but all the lads kept themselves going and Callum in particular has trained really well. He comes into the 22 and if he is called upon, he will be ready,” he added

Wrexham have now confirmed the decision on the club’s official website with the final squad now submitted.

A back injury has kept wide man Forde out of action and he now hasn’t featured for Wrexham since the 13th of January.

The Irishman’s season is now effectively over and McFadzean has a chance to step up.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed a frustrating season to date, failing to make a league appearance and playing just three times across EFL Cup and EFL Trophy games.

McFadzean is bound to be rusty after such a lack of football but Parkinson clearly believes that he could still have an impact.

James McClean’s recent performances in midfield mean McFadzean can offer another option in the left wing back spot.

Jacob Mendy will certainly still be ahead of McFadzean but you never know when somebody will be needed – especially with promotion on the line.
