Wrexham completed a double swoop for Sebastian Revan and Callum Burton on Monday, with Phil Parkinson explaining what the former will bring to the club.

Wrexham have enjoyed an incredibly successful transfer window so far, with Phil Parkinson addressing multiple areas of his squad ahead of League One.

Parkinson landed a permanent first-choice goalkeeper in Arthur Okonkwo, a central defender in Lewis Brunt and George Dobson, a midfielder who captained Charlton Athletic last term.

On Monday, Wrexham continued that momentum in the market by completing the double swoop of goalkeeper Callum Burton and versatile defender Sebastian Revan.

Whilst Burton was captured from Plymouth Argyle and will likely play as second choice to Okonkwo, the Reds signed Revan on a three-year deal from Premier League giants Aston Villa.

Revan spent last season on loan at Rotherham United, who suffered relegation from the Championship, but the 21-year-old was a rare shining light for Steve Evans.

Phil Parkinson explains what Sebastian Revan will bring to Wrexham

Having experienced loan spells in the National League at Hereford United and Grimsby Town, the young defender made a huge step up in 2023/24, racking up 36 appearances in the second tier for Rotherham.

Predominantly playing as a left-back or wing-back, Revan was used 19 times in that position, while also operating on the right side of defence.

Wrexham wanted to add cover for current first-choice left-back Jacob Mendy, and they’ve achieved that whilst adding competition on the centre and right flank.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official website, Parkinson believes his performances in the Championship ‘stood out’ and his versatility was a crucial aspect behind his signing.

“Seb is a player that stood out for us from his performances in the Championship and he is only going to improve with us,” he said.

“He offers us great versatility because he can play both on the right and the left. He’s a good young player and we’re delighted to have him on board.”

How Sebastian Revan will fit in at Wrexham

Wrexham are well covered in central defence and on the right with a plethora of options to choose from however, that isn’t the case at left-back.

Mendy was their sole option in that position as Parkinson sees James McClean as a midfielder but adding Revan into the mix gives the Reds an exciting talent to pick.

He was supposedly brought into the squad to challenge Mendy and defensively, he looks to be an upgrade on the Gambian.

As highlighted by FBref, Revan ranked inside the top 13% of Championship defenders for blocks and the top 20% for clearances. Although Rotherham faced a barrage of attacks most weeks, the 21-year-old stood firm and showed he’s more than capable of holding his own.

Parkinson will hope Revan brings those defensive attributes to the Racecourse Ground as the Reds will be tested far more in that regard.

Most importantly, though, the signing from Aston Villa fits the criteria; he’s young, boasts lots of potential, has experience playing in the Championship and fixes a problem position for Wrexham.
