Wrexham now have the chance to sign one of their long-term targets following his release from their League One rivals.

Wrexham are currently ironing out their preparations ahead of their biggest challenge yet.

A campaign in League One for the first time in almost two decades is on the horizon, and Phil Parkinson is currently scouring the market for out-of-contract players and those entering the final year of their deal.

During Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds time at the club, Wrexham have been savvy in the transfer window, often picking up experienced assets capable of playing at a higher level on a free.

Most of their signings, particularly James McClean and Steven Fletcher, fall into this category and Parkinson attempted to carry out that strategy in the January window.

The 56-year-old acquired Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott but they also tried to pull off a club record deal for Rotherham United’s Jamie Lindsay, who has just been released by the Millers.

Jamie Lindsay pens message to fans after leaving Rotherham

Wrexham attempted to pull off a club-record deal for Lindsay in January to bolster their midfield ranks.

The Millers, though, were reluctant to let him depart without signing a replacement as the 28-year-old featured 21 times in the Championship as his side were relegated.

With Rotherham looking to rebuild under manager Steve Evans in League One, the Yorkshire side aren’t messing around in the transfer window having already made five signings, including goal machine Jonson Clarke-Harris, left-back Reece James, midfielder Shaun McWilliams and Portsmouth title-winning duo Joe Rafferty and Shaun Raggett.

Rotherham have stolen a head start on their rivals by acquiring an abundance of talent with third-tier experience. Lindsay falls into that bracket but Evans doesn’t see him as a part of their plans, deciding to release the midfielder.

After making 161 appearances for the club, Lindsay penned an emotional message to supporters on X:

Wrexham should snap up Jamie Lindsay

Wrexham were prepared to smash their transfer record in the winter to sign him and now, the Scottish dynamo is available on a free transfer.

This is an opportunity for McElhenney and Reynolds to land a bargain this summer with Lindsay featuring 28 times the last time the Millers were in the third tier.

Parkinson’s current midfield options of Andy Cannon, George Evans, Elliot Lee and James McClean are strong, but adding Lindsay into the mix would give them some much-needed protection.

Wrexham parted ways with midfield general Luke Young following six years which has opened the door for a new player to arrive in the engine room.

The Reds must pounce quickly to land the released Rotherham man as several clubs in League One will be eyeing him up.
