Wrexham are preparing for the next test in their promotion run in as they welcome Burton Albion to North Wales.

Burton signed three former Wrexham stars in the January transfer window and the former Red Dragons are fighting to help keep the club in League One with them sitting in the final relegation slot.

Phil Parkinson’s former favourites Anthony Forde and James Jones are now plying their trade with Burton and could return to the Racecourse Ground for the upcoming clash.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson has become a fan favourite at Burton and after enduring a difficult time with Wrexham earlier in the season, Parkinson’s reason for letting him go could be about to haunt him.

Phil Parkinson’s reason for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s Wrexham departure

Bodvarsson was allowed to depart Wrexham back in January for strugglers Burton before the likes of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez were signed for the club.

As per BBC Sport, Parkinson revealed the reason behind the decision to let the Icelandic striker leave despite having limited options in forward areas at the time.

Parkinson stated: “Jon needed to go and play for his own career and if we couldn’t guarantee him game time he wanted to play because he’s still young enough to continue his career.”

Bodvarsson has been struggling with a calf problem in recent weeks and has missed the last two games but could return to haunt his old side as the Red Dragons look for three points towards their promotion charge.

Bodvarsson’s impact on Burton Albion

Since his January move from Wrexham, Bodvarsson has been in good form for Burton and has helped to revive their chances of survival in League One.

Burton have picked up seven wins since his arrival and Bodvarsson has been a major contributor, scoring four goals in ten games for the club.

Wrexham will now be hoping that the striker’s good form doesn’t come back to hurt their chances of promotion, the Red Dragons need three points in the upcoming clash in order to keep pace with Wycombe.

Despite their 2-2 draw with Cambridge, Wrexham did not lose any ground in the race for promotion with Wycombe also being held but Parkinson will know that they cannot afford any more slips.
