Wrexham know that three points at Wigan Athletic will go a long way to achieving their goal of League One promotion.

Wrexham fans were delighted with Phil Parkinson’s award of manager of the month for March, a period in which the Red Dragons picked up 16 points in amongst some heavyweight clashes.

Wigan will be no easy task as Ryan Lowe’s side have an excellent defensive record this season in League One having conceded just 39 goals in the entire campaign.

Parkinson will be looking to the likes of Sam Smith and maybe even Steven Fletcher from the bench once again to provide the spark to victory but Wigan will be a resilient opposition to break down.

Ryan Lowe highlights key strength of Wrexham

Speaking to Wigan Athletic’s official website, manager Lowe has been full of praise for Wrexham and their performances this season that have taken them to the brink of promotion.

He also highlighted a key strength of Parkinson’s side that could make the difference in the race with Wycombe for second place.

Lowe stated: “We’ve got to look after ourselves first and foremost and respect Wrexham for what they are. I think Phil Parkinson has done a fantastic job going through the divisions, and he has some real quality in the team and a lot of experience and know-how to get over the line.

“We’ll pay Wrexham the respect they deserve, but on our own turf, it’s a game where we want to go and impress ourselves. We’ll have to be solid and hard to beat again, but we certainly want to have attacking impetus as well.

“It’s going to be a tough game for both teams for different reasons. We’ve got to go out there with a smile on our faces, play the way we like to play, and hopefully come away with some points.”

Wrexham captain James McClean to face former side in Wigan Athletic

James McClean played 171 times for Wigan Athletic during his time there and will be looking to lead his Wrexham side to three points in the upcoming clash however, he has guarded against complacency.

As per the Leader, McClean stated: “Nothing changes for us, it is one game at a time. That’s the way it still has to be approached. Belief is strong and confidence is high given where we are and the run of form we’ve been on.

“But we can’t rest on our laurels and we can’t be complacent. We have got to go to Wigan and the full focus is to get a win.”

With Wycombe hosting Stevenage, it could prove to be a decisive day in the League One promotion race and the Red Dragons will need to be patient and composed in their quest for three points.

Parkinson issued a rallying cry to Wrexham fans who are making the journey to Wigan and they will need to keep behind the team as they look to unlock the resistance put in front of them.
