Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds could follow trends from previous windows and make a ‘big name’ signing for the club this summer.

Wrexham have grown used to shocking the world since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds tookover the club.

During their time in the National League, the Reds somehow captured Paul Mullin in July 2021, despite him just firing Cambridge United into League One.

In the following summer, Wrexham also signed former Luton Town midfielder Elliot Lee, who had previously played Championship football for the Hatters.

Their trend of attracting big-name signings continued last summer when they lured former Premier League players James McClean and Steven Fletcher to the Racecourse Ground.

In the current transfer window, those type of signings have been in short supply with Phil Parkinson building for the future, as opposed to the present.

However, the Reds could still throw up a few surprises in the closing stages of the transfer window.

Wrexham can be pleased with the business they’ve completed.

Parkinson has focused on locking down his defence by signing two goalkeepers, Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton while adding three defenders in Dan Scarr, Lewis Brunt and Sebastian Revan.

Midfielder George Dobson was also captured on a free transfer but neither of those six signings jumped off the page and screamed ‘marquee’ player, although Okonkwo joining did receive such a reception.

Parkinson has now turned his attention to adding quality to his attack, with the Wrexham boss eyeing a striker on loan, namely Will Lankshear, Kieron Bowie or Bailey Cadamarteri.

Whilst those players aren’t necessarily ‘big names’, journalist Bryn Law believes if the Reds were to sign one, it would be a striker, especially with Mullin working his way back to full fitness.

Speaking on the Sport in Wales YouTube channel, Law said: “There were a couple of conversations, not with people directly connected with the football club in America but with a connection, nevertheless, that suggested there was still quite a bit more work to be done. And given that was only two weeks ago, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more signings yet.

“But I still think the one area is that area up front. Basically, if you’re signing a striker that’s a big news announcement isn’t it? Strikers get headlines, so one of the guys they were linked with in the past was Alfie May and he’s gone to Birmingham City, who have been very busy in the market themselves. I would look at a potential big name as a striker maybe.”

What Wrexham still need in the transfer window

It remains to be seen whether Wrexham make a ‘big name’ signing before the window draws to a close.

With the August 30th deadline fast approaching, Parkinson will be keen to wrap up his business ahead of time, or at least have several deals in the pipeline.

Wrexham still desperately need a striker who can take some of the goal-scoring burden away from Mullin and fire a consistent stream of goals in League One.

The Reds are somewhat reliant on Mullin, so when he’s injured, they need another striker to step up however, none can comfortably fill his void.

Parkinson could also do with a central attacking midfielder, who can act as competition for Lee and come into the side when he needs a rest.

Lee is by far Wrexham’s most important midfielder for what he brings in the final third and without him in the side, their goal threat is significantly weakened.

It promises to be a fascinating end to the transfer window, whatever happens, so keep your eyes peeled on how the club attacks the rest of August.
