Rob McElhenney avoids ‘consolidation’ idea as Wrexham prepare for life in the Championship after promotion

Wrexham will soon prepare for life in the Championship but will have genuine hopes of going even further.

Last Saturday brought another on-pitch celebration at the STōK Cae Ras as Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0.

As if two straight promotions weren’t enough, Wrexham made it three in a row on Saturday.

Wrexham end another brilliant season this weekend, heading to Lincoln City for the final day of the League One campaign.

Phil Parkinson is dodging transfer talk until after the final game, but Wrexham may be set for another big summer.

Rob McElhenney sends exciting message to Wrexham fans

Reports this week suggested that Wrexham are ready to splash the cash in the Championship.

It was claimed that Wrexham could rival relegated clubs Ipswich Town, Leicester and Southampton for signings this summer.

That suggests that Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are ready to back Wrexham with considerable funds this summer.

Ally McCoist is predicting a ‘stabilising’ season for Wrexham, believing the club will settle in mid-table in the Championship rather than make it four promotions in a row.

Humphrey Ker spoke of Wrexham consolidating in League One, aiming for a 10th-place finish a year ago.

Wrexham blew past that goal in style – and McElhenney seemingly isn’t interested in consolidating in the Championship.

‘If I’m being honest I don’t even know what the word “consolidation” means’ said McElhenney on X, tagging Wrexham in the post.

This has just served to spark more and more excitement for this summer and next season, with fans taking that message to mean Wrexham will go for another promotion.

That is a lofty goal, given the size of the other clubs in the Championship, but McElhenney is seemingly keeping his ambitions high.

Wrexham priorities in the transfer market

Wrexham have been brilliant over the course of the League One season, but must strengthen a number of areas to continue rising in the Championship.

A goalkeeper is unlikely to be on the radar with Arthur Okonkwo simply outstanding between the sticks.

Max Cleworth will be one of the first names on the team sheet and Parkinson may well trust Eoghan O’Connell and Dan Scarr to make the step up.

Will Boyle is likely to leave, and another left-footed centre back could be ideal with right-footed Lewis Brunt often playing on that side in League One.

Ryan Barnett and Ryan Longman have a great battle on the right side, but we would not be surprised to see Sebastian Revan head out on loan for more game time.

That could pave the way for another left wing back to arrive as competition for Wrexham captain James McClean.

Matty James, George Dobson, George Evans and Ollie Rathbone offer quality in midfield, but Andy Cannon’s serious injury means another midfielder will surely arrive.

We have urged Wrexham to sign a playmaker in recent times and this must be a position of priority this summer.

Elliot Lee still has so much quality, but his quiet 2025 and the lack of clear competition means another signing must be made.

Wrexham have been linked with Tom Lawrence and could sign the Wrexham-born playmaker when his Rangers deal ends.

Striking additions will be up in the air for now, with Steven Fletcher yet to sign a new contract.

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer are likely to move on, whilst Modou Faal could be loaned out for more first-team action.

Another striker may therefore be a priority this summer, just months after breaking the club’s transfer record on Sam Smith.

This promises to be another busy summer for Wrexham, with McElhenney seemingly aiming high just days after promotion.
