Wrexham will be playing Championship football next season having beaten Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday evening.

Wrexham were given a golden chance to secure a third straight promotion on Saturday.

Wycombe Wanderers lost at Leyton Orient, setting the stage for a huge evening at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham knew that victory over Charlton Athletic would secure promotion – and Phil Parkinson’s men delivered in style.

Wrexham beat Charlton 3-0, saving one of the best performances of the season for when it mattered most.

Charlton fans were impressed with Wrexham, suggesting that the better team won as the promotion celebrations began at the STōK Cae Ras.

Ally McCoist on Wrexham in the Championship

28 May will mark three years since Wrexham’s heartbreaking play-off defeat to Grimsby Town.

Fast forward to the present day and Wrexham are now preparing for life as a Championship club.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ takeover has put Wrexham on an incredible path, whilst Phil Parkinson has been knitting the side together and producing results.

Three promotions in a row is a simply ridiculous record, but few will be backing Wrexham for a fourth.

The Championship is a different animal to League One and pundit Ally McCoist believes Wrexham will ‘stabilise’ in the second tier.

McCoist loves Championship football and its competitive nature but thinks another Wrexham promotion is a ‘big ask’ even with investment in new signings this summer.

McCoist seemingly believes that Wrexham will comfortably survive in the Championship, but will settle for mid-table and then build from there.

“I just love that Championship, I love it,” said McCoist on TalkSPORT.

“It’s proper, it’s competitive, it’s Tuesday-Saturday, it’s ‘get your sleeves rolled up, let’s get in and about it’, you’re playing half fit, you’re playing 30% injured, everything.

“I just think they’ll stabilise. They might go an invest and they might do it, but surely it’s a big ask,” he added.

Troy Deeney shares Wrexham prediction

Some weren’t expecting Wrexham to go up this season so that outside noise won’t bother Parkinson too much.

Troy Deeney has doubted Wrexham’s Premier League dream but has now predicted a strong Championship campaign.

Deeney suggested that Wrexham’s style of play is ‘very basic’ and may be viewed as ‘food and drink’ for Championship defences.

The former Watford striker does, though, believe that Wrexham will secure a top-half finish despite envisaging a more competitive division next season.

“I think they’ll struggle to spend to the level they want,” said Deeney. “I think, just as much as giving Phil Parkinson great credit for what he’s done so far, I think the way that they play is very basic in terms of being well organised, they’re structured, they go back to front very quickly, they get a lot of crosses in the box… that’s food and drink in the Championship, everyone should be ready to do that.

“I would say… I think they will be top half in the Championship next year. I do think a lot of teams will be better, I would expect it to be a more competitive Championship than it has been in the last couple of seasons,” he added.

That would certainly be an impressive first season back in the second tier for Wrexham, but we can’t rule out an even better campaign, for the simple reason that the impossible always seems possible around Wrexham right now.

Parkinson needs some smart summer signings to take Wrexham forward again, but he certainly has our backing in terms of making a competitive side at the next level.
