Rob McElhenney made bold prediction for Wrexham star after Wycombe Wanderers win – it hasn’t worked out

Wrexham are set to travel to Wycombe for a major League One meeting, kicking off at 3pm on Saturday.

Wrexham head into the match looking to bounce back from their shock 2-0 loss to Reading earlier this week.

The Red Dragons were dire against the Royals and were not helped out by a questionable penalty decision.

Losing to Reading means Wrexham’s meeting with Wycombe Wanderers is now even more important than it already was.

The Welsh outfit are level on points with The Chairboys, but they have an eight-worse goal difference and have already played an extra league game this term.

As a result, if Wrexham lose, they could end up six points off second by the time next weekend rolls around.

So, the Hollywood-owned club are no doubt desperate for a repeat of what transpired in the previous meeting between the two League One heavyweights.

What Rob McElhenney said about Jack Marriott after Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers

Wrexham’s first-ever game in League One was against Wycombe on August 10th, 2024.

The clash at the Racecourse Ground got off to a perfect start for the newly-promoted side, with Max Cleworth opening the scoring after nine minutes.

Jack Marriott made it 2-0 20 minutes later before Richard Kone pulled on back in the 58th minute.

However, Steven Fletcher came off the bench to make it 3-1 before Sam Vokes’ 89th-minute strike proved to be nothing more than a consultation goal for Wycombe.

Following the game, Rob McElhenney made a bold Marriott prediction, tipping the striker, who had previously struggled in Wales, ‘to shine’.

He said: “I was just really excited for Jack [Marriott]. I just feel like he is going to shine.

“He was just looking for that goal that is going to give him the confidence to go out there and be the player that he is.

“It was beautiful. We don’t have any replay here so we had to run back in. We don’t have it up on TV so we had to look on our phones and find it.”

Jack Marriott struggling at Wrexham again

Wrexham signed Marriott from Fleetwood Town in February 2024 for an undisclosed fee.

The 30-year-old had little impact during his first half-season at the club, scoring just one league goal in 17 outings.

Following McElhenney tipping the forward to shine, Marriott went on to net on four more occasions in nine outings before suffering an injury that ruled him out for several months.

Since his return to action in January, however, the Englishman has once again been struggling to find the back of the net.

He’s started two EFL Trophy meetings and come off the bench in nine league fixtures, but goals are once again eluding the hitman.
