Wrexham’s men are preparing for a big weekend as Phil Parkinson takes his side down to face Exeter City in League One.

All eyes are on the League One promotion race, with Wrexham chasing a place in the Championship.

Wrexham beat Stockport County last weekend, and a third straight promotion is still a real possibility.

Wrexham fans may be focused on the men’s team right now, but the Wrexham Women have been in great form of late.

Since a 3-2 defeat to Swansea City on January 19, Wrexham Women have racked up seven wins in the last eight games.

The 2-1 victory over Adran Premier leaders Cardiff City earlier in March was a particular highlight, with Wrexham sitting third in the table.

Del Morgan explains retirement decision

We have seen Wrexham Women profiled prominently on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds supporting their rise just as much as the men.

Reynolds loves seeing Wrexham Women play at the STōK Cae Ras, calling one performance one of the most memorable days of his life.

Rosie Hughes and Lili Jones have been featured on the show, whilst we also saw Mia Roberts unfortunately being told that she was being let go.

Major news broke from the Wrexham Women on Wednesday as goalkeeper Del Morgan announced her plans to retire.

Morgan was at the club in the days of Wrexham Ladies before they withdrew in the 2015-16 season.

Returning in 2021, Morgan has played a key role in the rise of Wrexham Women over the last few years.

Speaking to Wrexham’s official website, Morgan has admitted that her retirement has ‘been a long time coming’.

Morgan has been working as a goalkeeping coach with Liverpool Women and now feels the time has come to focus on coaching.

Morgan admitted that she just can’t imagine playing for anybody but Wrexham – and actually knew that she would retire with the club upon returning in 2021.

“I think it’s been a long time coming, I’ve been thinking about it as far back as pre-season and the biggest reason is work and my career,” said Morgan.

“Working full-time at an elite environment such as Liverpool Football Club, and then trying to juggle that with being a semi-professional here at Wrexham is difficult. It’s been hard for me to give 100 per cent to both, and I think it’s come to a point where I have to choose which path I would like to follow more – and that’s my coaching career.

“I can’t imagine playing for anybody else other than Wrexham after all this – after all the experiences I’ve had with the Club, the success that we’ve had and the people that I’ve met, and just the love I have for the Club, I can’t imagine playing for another team. I always knew when I signed four years ago that I would end my playing career with Wrexham anyway,” she added.

Rob McElhenney on Del Morgan

Morgan’s retirement is a blow for Wrexham Women, and the news has prompted a reaction from Rob McElhenney.

McElhenney has taken to social media to send a heartfelt message to Morgan, praising her for her impact at Wrexham.

“One of the best players we’ve had at the club, on and off the pitch. We’ll miss you Del,” said McElhenney, alongside a heart emoji.

This is not the first time that McElhenney has praised the importance of Morgan.

Speaking on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, Season Three, Episode Three, McElhenney suggested that Morgan was just as vital as goalscoring star Rosie Hughes.

“I would put her up there just as important as Rosie,” said McElhenney.

“The second most important thing to winning football games, beyond scoring goals, is not allowing goals in the net and Del stopped so many sure goals last year to secure promotion,” he added.

Morgan will now focus on her coaching career at Liverpool and will depart Wrexham with well-wishes from all connected with the club.
