Wrexham’s 2024/25 season was an impressive one, but still had a few low moments, one of which Rob McElhenney watched unfold.

After previously spending over a decade stuck in the National League, Wrexham have climbed three divisions in as many years.

Championship football awaits the Red Dragons later in 2025 after they won promotion from League One.

Wrexham made club history this past campaign, earning themselves an impressive 92 points.

However, 2024/25 was not without its issues, especially on the injury front and more specifically, their goalkeeper department.

Rob McElhenney praise for Callum Burton

Wrexham lost Arthur Okonkwo to injury in November 2024, seeing Callum Burton handed the number-one spot.

Burton arrived on a free transfer from Plymouth Argyle last summer, making his league debut in a 1-0 defeat to Stockport County on November 16.

Wrexham lost that game 1-0 before beating Exeter City 3-0 and Lincoln City 1-0 in the club’s following two League One matches.

Next up was a clash against Barnsley, which Rob McElhenney watched live at the Cosm venue in Los Angeles.

McElhenney’s experience of that day was captured in the new episode of Welcome to Wrexham, which came out on Friday.

The episode showed Rob praising Burton shortly before he was forced off with an injury just 23 minutes into the game.

McElhenney said: “Callum’s playing so well, he’s got two clean sheets in a row, only given up one goal in three games, which is a great problem to have when Arthur comes back.”

Burton did not return to the League One squad until April 5, 2025, against Burton Albion.

He was on the bench for the club’s final six league matches of the season but did not feature.

In the EFL Trophy, Burton made three appearances for Wrexham, keeping two clean sheets and conceding one goal.

The 28-year-old also featured in the League Cup, shipping four as the Dragons were beaten 4-2 by Sheffield United.
