Wrexham and Huddersfield Town faced off in a League One meeting on Tuesday evening.

The Red Dragons headed into the game sat two points adrift of second place Wycombe Wanderers, who had a fairly easy clash with Burton Albion to play out.

As expected, Wycombe came away with a win and the three points in their midweek fixture, meaning it was crucial Wrexham came out on top against Huddersfield Town.

Due to the defensive nature of both sides there was not a lot of clear-cut chances from either outfit, especially in the first 45.

However, Steven Fletcher earned praise from fans as he once again came off the bench to score a winning goal and hand Wrexham a 1-0 win over Huddersfield.

Fletcher replaced Jay Rodriguez, partnering record signing Sam Smith up front until he was taken off in the 88th minute.

Sam Smith reacts to Wrexham win and Charlie Savage responds

Fletcher is now outperforming Jay Stansfield of Birmingham City in one key statistic this season, but his advanced age means he’s unlikely to start too many games despite his clear form.

Instead, Phil Parkinson will need the likes of Smith to step up and produce the goals in the final few months of the campaign.

The number nine joined from Reading in January and has so far scored one league goal for Wrexham.

He played 88 minutes against Huddersfield before taking to Instagram to share his verdict on the game.

Smith wrote: “Another big 3 points on the road,” while his formerteammate and son of Robbie Savage, Charlie, took to the comment section of the post to send the ex-Reading man a message, writing: “Nice Samuel.”

Sam Smith stats for Wrexham vs Huddersifled Town

Smith has 12 league goals to his name this season, but only one of them has come since his winter transfer.

However, the striker’s off-the-ball work and hold-up play has still been crucial for Wrexham in recent weeks.
