Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has announced his shock decision to retire just four games into the new League Two season. The veteran goalkeeper made 12 appearances for Wrexham since returning to the club in 2023, but his performances so far this season have been subpar.

Ben Foster announces his retirement

“The honest truth is that my performances this season haven’t reached the level I demand of myself and I feel that now is the right time to retire,” Foster told Wrexham’s website.

“At the forefront of my mind when making this decision was not only what was best for me but also the club, and making the decision now gives the club every opportunity to assess their options before the window closes. Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart.”

Foster also shared a video to his Instagram page where he discussed the decision in more detail. The veteran goalie admitted that he’d been “brutally honest” with himself and that he “can’t really do what he used to do.”

He added that he thinks there’s already been four of five goals this season that he should have saved, which is ultimately why he made the decision.

Both Wrexham fans and the wider football world reacted to the news which broke earlier today. Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds was one of Foster’s biggest supporters and had this to say on Twitter.

“He built memories I’ll never let go of for as long as I live. I love this guy. Thank you for everything, Ben.”

Foster was a crucial part of the team last season that was promoted from the National League with a record 111 points.

His penalty save in the 96th minute against title rivals Notts County to secure a vital 3-2 win will live long in the memory and go down in Wrexham folklore.

Many fans feel it’s the right time for Foster to move on, but thanked him for his services the club over the past year.
