Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac were not the first celebrities to own a football club; there have been countless examples throughout the history of the sport, including Elton John with Watford and Delia Smith with Norwich City.
However, the pair have seemingly heralded a new era of this trend, with the pair inspiring the docuseries format to promote their club to new heights off the pitch too.
Tom Brady has become a co-owner at the Blues, a club which recently released a docuseries on Amazon, with one journalist believing Birmingham City to be a ‘cynical’ copy of Wrexham.
Another celebrity owner in the EFL currently is David Beckham, who is co-owner of Salford City. While these owners will be interested in success on the pitch for their clubs, each of them have been nominated for a unique award from PEOPLE magazine, one which Ryan Reynolds believes should go to the Oldham Athletic owner.

Ryan Reynolds believes Frank Rothwell should win PEOPLE’s Sexiest Football Club Owner
Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac were nominated for the unique award, PEOPLE’s Sexiest Football Club Owner, along with Birmingham City owner Tom Brady, David Beckham of Salford City and Mark Consuelos, who is the co-owner of Campobasso FC.
The latter and the ‘Deadpool’ star were discussing this award on Live: Kelly and Mark, with the Wrexham owner suggesting there should be only one winner, and that was the Oldham Athletic owner.
He said: “David Beckham, a very handsome man. [Tom Brady] Also, very handsome. You could crack a walnut with that chin.
“Let’s not sleep on Oldham FC’s Frank Rothwell. A name many of you may not know here in America, but he is the oldest man to row across the Pacific Ocean.
“That’s very sexy if you ask me.
“What the hell has Beckham done lately?”
The only thing to note from this interview is that Reynolds got his information wrong about which ocean Rothwell rowed, as it was the Atlantic and not the Pacific.

Frank Rothwell responded to Ryan Reynolds’ comments
The Oldham owner was shown the clip by their media team, with Rothwell excited about being called the sexiest football owner by Ryan Reynolds, despite clearly not knowing who the ‘Deadpool’ star is.
Rothwell said: “Ryan Reynolds who I have never seen… is comparing me to David Beckham, said I’m more sexy than David Beckham. Yes!
“Now then, I thought you were a welder. They tell me that you are an actor, and I have to go watch a film called Dead Ringer.
“Ryan, if you are still listening, get in touch and we will send you over a season ticket so you can come to any game, and we will make you mega welcome.”
