Wrexham have received criticism ahead of their upcoming Championship fixture against Sheffield Wednesday.

Both sides are going in search of their first league win of the season on Saturday, but much of the focus in the build-up to the fixture has been on issues away from the pitch.

As they have done in previous league matches this season, Sheffield Wednesday fans plan to protest during the Wrexham match.

Owls supporters, who have lost a number of their key players this summer and have seen their team placed under embargoes by the EFL, continue to hit out at their owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

Wrexham fans are expected to show their support for the Yorkshire club during the fixture, but their club are now receiving backlash ahead of the tie.

Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham under fire before Sheffield Wednesday

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters’ Trust released a social media message late on Thursday evening regarding the planned protest.

In it, they said: “We’ve been trying to arrange for the banners used at Leicester to also be displayed at Wrexham this weekend. Unfortunately, we’ve been informed that this will not be permitted, as the banners are considered to carry ‘political connotations’.”

This has caused many fans to take to X/Twitter to express their displeasure at the decision, with some even sending messages to co-owner Ryan Reynolds.

One fan wrote: “@VancityReynolds You and Rob are well aware of the troubles we had with owners killing our club before you Rob came along. Let the Wednesday fans display their banners.”

A second tweeted: “So a club owned by fellow Thai’s let us display it, no problem, a club owned by 2 American actors won’t, because of politics. That’s —- —- @VancityReynolds.”

“@Wrexham_AFC @VancityReynolds Please don’t deny our right to protest with the use of our banners. They’re not political at all, and you know that. Help us and help football. We have to raise awareness to owners who are not fit or proper to run a club,” added a third.

Despite the club’s stance, Wrexham fans have made it clear they are willing to back the Wednesday supporters.

A fourth fan wrote: “Disappointed to read this, unfortunately, there are definitely some jobsworths within the leadership team of our club. That said our fanbase will always stand shoulder to shoulder with fellow fans whose clubs are in crisis through bad owners.”

A fifth fan added: “Disappointed in our club for this, us fans though support you 100%. We know exactly what it’s like to have rogue owners, and will never forget the misery they put us through. People like Chansiri (and Hamilton Guterman/Moss, Roberts in our case) should never be allowed near clubs

“That’s a shame the club have taken that stance. The fans will be with you. I will be wearing my black and gold shirt on Saturday,” another stated.

Wrexham fans familiar with Sheffield Wednesday struggles

Before Reynolds and Mac came along, Wrexham had some serious ownership issues.

In August 2011, the club was just hours away from expulsion from the Football Conference

Their owners at the time had to pay £250,000, but an offer of £150,000 was made instead, leaving fans to make up the remaining £100,000.

They did so in just one day, saving the club from extinction.
