Shaun Harvey travelled to Australia for Wrexham’s 2025 pre-season tour and got an up-close look at the club’s training.

Wrexham had a mixed tour of Australia, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Wellington Phoenix.

Prior to that, the Red Dragons lost to Sydney FC but did secure a comfortable 3-0 win over Melbourne Victory.

The Welsh outfit have now returned to the UK and will be playing a couple more friendlies before the 2025/26 season gets underway.

Now, Shaun Harvey has shared an insight into the type of training Wrexham have been doing in the build-up to the new campaign.

Shaun Harvey confused by Wrexham training

While out in Australia and New Zealand, Harvey appeared on Ben Foster’s podcast, Fozcast.

The former Wrexham goalkeeper made the trip alongside another ex-player, Ben Tozer.

And when speaking to Foster during the club’s 2025 pre-season tour, Harvey revealed that he was left baffled by what he saw from the players in training.

He said: “I watched some training sessions and I genuinely didn’t understand what they were trying to achieve.

“I mean the effort was there, don’t get me wrong. I actually had to ask one of the sports medicine staff just to explain to me what’s going on, because, and Fozzy you’re going to laugh, because there was a team without bibs, one with blue bibs, and one with yellow bibs, and they were passing to each other, and it was all about pressing.

“Now I just hadn’t contemplated what was the purpose of what they were doing here. And then playing disjointed sides, four against three and overloads.

“But it was just what they try and do in a game, how practising and refining it, but doing it with centre-halves playing at centre forward and just different shapes.

“It’s been a real education, and it will help. It will definitely help when it comes to the recruitment of coaching staff, looking at what it is you need.”

Wrexham to face FC Groningen

Due to the ongoing renovations at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham cannot currently play any fixtures at home.

So, despite already travelling to Australia this summer, they are once again heading abroad for their next match.

Wrexham will play Dutch outfit FC Groningen in a friendly on Saturday, August 2, kicking off at 3pm local time.

Red Dragons fans have been told they are unable to attend the fixture, which will be streamed on the club’s website instead.
