One of Wrexham’s Championship rivals this season is now facing the prospect of a points deduction.

After eight matches, Wrexham sit 15th in the Championship table on nine points.

They are three clear of the relegation zone, with Sheffield Wednesday currently occupying the final spot in the bottom three following a 2-2 draw with Birmingham City in midweek.

Rob Mac made a generous gesture to the Owls’ Supporters Trust when the two teams met in August amid Wednesday’s ongoing financial problems.

But Sheffield Wednesday are still struggling on that front, and a points deduction is expected.

Sheffield Wednesday points deduction expected

Wrexham signed Josh Windass on a free after he terminated his contract with the Owls amid financial issues.

They have continued into October, with it reported on Wednesday that the Yorkshire outfit’s first-team have gone unpaid for the fifth month out of six.

As the crisis under Dejphon Chansiri continues to unfold, Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports has shared an update on a potential punishment via X/Twitter.

He wrote: “Now Oct 1, #swfc deadline has passed. I’m told all youth players and some admin staff paid y’day, but first team not paid.

“New EFL sanctions will now be automatically applied. Size of wrap sheet, when it comes to independent commission, means a points deduction almost inevitable.”

Wrexham once suffered 10-point deduction

Long-time Wrexham fans will surely sympathise with Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

They are more than familiar with what poor ownership can do to a football club, and were handed a 10-point deduction themselves back in 2004.

Wrexham were in League One at the time and their appeal to overturn the punishment was denied in January 2005, as per BBC News.

The Red Dragons ended up suffering relegation in that season, and did not return to the third tier of English football until 2024/25.
