Tranmere Rovers eyeing potential Wrexham-like documentary series as celebrity investment draws closer

Wrexham’s rise under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds has made headlines all over the world and one local rival could go down a similar route.

2024 is heading into its final stages and this has been another great year for Wrexham.

Phil Parkinson got over the line in League Two, leading Wrexham into League One off the back of successive promotions.

Wrexham have started this season brilliantly too, sitting second in the table after 11 games.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have enjoyed more off-field success too with Season Three of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ proving a huge hit.

Wrexham’s rise was always likely to spark more celebrity interest in buying football clubs and that could be the case for Tranmere Rovers.

Tranmere Rovers could follow Wrexham model

American celebrities aren’t going straight in and buying Premier League clubs.

Yes, former NFL superstar J.J. Watt has invested in Burnley but he is just an investor rather than an owner, just like Tom Brady at Birmingham City.

Taking a perceivably ‘unfashionable’ lower league club like Wrexham is now the major appeal and that could be the case for A$AP Rocky.

The American rapper is part of a US investment group who are set to purchase 80% of Tranmere Rovers, according to The Sun.

It’s stated that the deal will cost around £15million, a lot more than McElhenney and Reynolds paid for Wrexham.

The report claims that a ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ style documentary series around Tranmere is in the plans and could be commissioned by a ‘streaming giant’.

A$AP Rocky will drive enough interest on his own, but the potential of his wife Rihanna being involved in the documentary too will certainly garner interest.

Celebrities could add to Wrexham v Tranmere Rovers rivalry

This would certainly add an interesting dynamic to the current rivalry between Wrexham and Tranmere Rovers.

Chester are Wrexham’s biggest rivals but Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers will always be just behind them.

Tranmere actually won at the STōK Cae Ras last season and there was something of a fracas after the full-time whistle.

James McClean even branded Tranmere’s Jean Belehouan as ‘embarrassing’ for his celebrations.

There is no love lost there and American owners would add an interesting spice to the rivalry if they can take Tranmere up the leagues.

If the hype around facing Birmingham City is anything to go by, the prospect of McElhenney and Reynolds against A$AP Rocky and Rihanna would be huge for TV coverage down the line with Wrexham’s model seemingly set to be followed at Prenton Park.
