Wrexham closed the gap on the League One automatic promotion places despite being held to a 0-0 draw against Bolton Wanderers.

Phil Parkinson’s side produced an excellent second half performance but were unable to take their chances, Wrexham fans were furious at Thomas O’Connor’s miss.

Ryan Longman impressed fans with his performance and was a constant threat down the right hand side, his cross should have set up the opening goal but Sam Smith got his header all wrong.

Wycombe’s defeat at Birmingham means that Wrexham close the gap to two points in the League One automatic promotion race and after the game Eoghan O’Connell was could not hide his delight at how the Red Dragons performed.

Eoghan O’Connell gives verdict on Wrexham’s performance

Speaking to the club’s official YouTube channel after the game, captain for the day O’Connell was pleased with the performance from his side and believes it shows how far Wrexham have come this season.

O’Connell stated: “I think we had a lot more chances and ball in their territory than I think earlier in the season, they started the game on fire and I thought we were hanging on for a bit, I thought it was a good away performance to take a point.”

The 0-0 draw at the Racecourse Ground was a totally different story to the 0-0 draw at Bolton earlier in the season and O’Connell highlighted that fact.

O’Connell explained: “First half even game but second half I thought we really had them on the rack and I thought if we got one, we could have got a couple more.”

O’Connell expecting tough task away at Huddersfield

Wrexham face a trip to Huddersfield next up in their quest for promotion and the defender is expecting a tough game against their fellow promotion chasers.

O’Connell stated: “Tough game. At this stage of the season it doesn’t really matter who you play because everybody is playing for something and Huddersfield are always going to be a good team in this league.”

Parkinson faces some tough selection calls ahead of that clash, especially in the wing-back areas as Longman and Sebastian Revan impressed in place of the usual duo of Ryan Barnett and James McClean.

The real area of concern however, was once again in central midfield and the right blend between tenacity and creativity needs to be found from the experienced Wrexham manager.
