Wrexham face Southampton in opening Championship fixture of the 2025-26 season
Wrexham will face recently-relegated Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium on the opening day of the new season.
Parkinson’s side could not have been handed a tougher introduction to life in the second tier, with the Saints having dropped down from the Premier League.

For Wrexham fans, it is a dream start to life in the Championship and plans will be being formulated to go and support the Red Dragons.
Southampton will have a new manager in charge for the opening day, Will Still was appointed back in May following their disappointing campaign in the top flight.
The two teams last clashed in 1979 during a league cup encounter, the Saints ran out 3-0 winners. The opening fixture will take place on Saturday August 9 in a 12:30 kick off (GMT).
Phil Parkinson’s record at Wrexham in opening games of the season
As far as opening days go, Parkinson has had a mixed time during his spell as Red Dragons boss.
So far, Parkinson has taken charge of four matches at the start of the season for Wrexham and has won two games, drawn one and lost one.
| Year | Result | Opponent |
| 2021 | 2-2 draw | Solihull (away) |
| 2022 | 2-1 win | Eastleigh (home) |
| 2023 | 5-3 defeat | MK Dons (home) |
| 2024 | 3-2 win | Wycombe (home) |
The first two games were back in the National League before Parkinson’s side were given a rude awakening in their return to the football league at the Racecourse Ground in 2023.
Fortunes were better last season in League One as a Jack Marriott wonder strike was the pick of the bunch in what turned out to be a crucial victory over promotion rivals Wycombe.
