Wrexham’s lead over Wycombe Wanderers has been cut to just one point after a 0-0 draw at Wigan Athletic on Saturday.
Wrexham travelled to the Brick Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but fans who made the trip to Wigan won’t be remembering this performance for years to come.
Wrexham drew 0-0 with Wigan Athletic and failed to register a single shot on target in the process.
Phil Parkinson’s side really lacked the quality needed in the final third and deservedly dropped two points on the road.
Wycombe Wanderers beat Stevenage 1-0 with a late Caleb Taylor goal, meaning they have cut Wrexham’s lead in second place to just one point.
Wrexham remain in that final automatic promotion spot but can’t afford to produce any more underwhelming attacking displays.
Wigan Athletic boss on Wrexham promotion hopes
Outside of Paul Mullin being in with the away fans, there wasn’t much for Wrexham supporters to get excited about on Saturday.
Wrexham just weren’t good enough on the day and must now hit back against Bristol Rovers on Friday.
Wigan boss Ryan Lowe praised Parkinson in the build-up to Saturday’s game, and offered his view on Wrexham after the final whistle.
As quoted by BBC Sport, Lowe admitted that he was disappointed that his side couldn’t turn a draw into a victory.
Lowe was delighted to see his side limit Wrexham to no shots on target, though, and pointed to how much money has been spent by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds on the Wrexham squad.
Lowe did, though, add that he wants to see Wrexham ‘get over the line’ and secure promotion to the Championship – despite his ties to Chester City.
The former striker enjoyed two separate spells at Chester and whilst there is a fierce rivalry with Wrexham, he still wants Parkinson to win another promotion.
“It was a good point. I’m disappointed we couldn’t take all three, I thought we had good opportunities to do that,” said Lowe.
“If you can win it, certainly don’t lose it. We nullified their strengths and tried at the top end of the pitch but just lacked that bit of quality, but it wasn’t for the want of trying.
“To not let them (Wrexham) have any shots on target, they’re second in the league, they’ve spent a lot of money to get to where they’re getting to, and I hope they get over the line.
“But, for us, I’m always pleased when we keep a clean sheet and limit good teams to limited opportunities,” he added.
Ryan Lowe on Wrexham style of play
Lowe also discussed Wrexham’s style of play whilst speaking to Wigan’s official YouTube channel.
The former Preston North End boss noted that his Wigan side handled Wrexham well, pointing to direct balls and diagonals from the back.
Lowe didn’t mean that in any disrespectful sense, highlighting the ‘quality’ with which Wrexham go from back to front under Parkinson.
“I thought we handled their pressure very, very well,” said Lowe.
“They do go back to front, but also with a bit of quality. I don’t want to disrespect them by saying they just go back to front – they’re playing you, they’re sucking you in, the wide centre backs are stepping in and hitting diagonals.
“We nullified their strengths, we just needed to have that little bit more composure at the top end of the pitch,” he added.
Wigan are now five points clear of the relegation zone and still have a game in hand on 21st-placed Bristol Rovers.
Wrexham could actually do Wigan a favour by beating Bristol Rovers on Friday; no wonder Lowe is quietly cheering Wrexham on from afar.
