Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney said he was ‘humbled’ by ‘wild’ win over Manchester United, and revealed his expectations for the coming season.

Wrexham‘s pre-season tour of the US has gone down a storm both here and overseas. The Red Dragons have now played three of their four scheduled games in the States, with two wins and a loss. The Welsh club’s most recent win came in the early hours of Wednesday morning as they beat Premier League giants Manchester United.

Rob McElhenney meets United boss before revelling in Wrexham goals

Wrexham no doubt enhanced their international reputation with a 3-1 win over a remarkably young Manchester United team in front of a stadium-record crowd at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

Goals from Elliot Lee, Aaron Hayden and Sam Dalby sealed victory for the North Wales club who were awarded the Snapdragon Cup.

Club co-owner Ryan Reynolds couldn’t be there as he’s filming Deadpool 3, however, fellow owner Rob McElhenney was in attendance.

Ahead of the friendly, Rob briefly met with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag. The pair were seen having a conversation and laughing before McElhenney shook Ten Hag’s hand and wished him good luck for the match.

Cameras later panned to McElhenney throughout the match as he celebrated all three of Wrexham’s goals:

After the game, McElhenney spoke to reporters about the result.

“So humbled by this entire experience,” McElhenney told Sky Sports. “Look at this, it’s wild.”

He then joked, “If you look around, it’s a sea of red, so I don’t know for sure, are they Man United fans or are they Wrexham fans?”

His expectations for Wrexham next season

The It’s Always Sunny actor then got more serious after he was asked what the club’s ambitions are for next season.

He said: “I mean, ultimately our goal every year is promotion. But we just want to go out there and be competitive.”

On potential new signings and how many new players could be brought in, he added, “I have no idea. We just keep checking in with Phil [Parkinson], Phil seems to be pretty happy with the squad we have, and we believe in Phil.”

Wrexham return to League Two next season for the first time in fifteen years. They kick of the new campaign on August 5th at home to MK Dons, but will do so without star striker Paul Mullin, who punctured his lung in the first half against United.
