Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has laid out some lofty ambitions for the Welsh club.
Wrexham are certainly on the up.
After owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over in 2020, the club went on to earn promotion from the National League last season, and are on course to challenge for a second successive promotion this season.
Parkinson currently finds his side in 3rd place of the League Two table after beating promotion rivals Barrow 4-1 at the Racecourse Ground on New Year’s Day.
And speaking in a recent interview, Parkinson haw revealed his and the owners’ ambitions for the club.
Phil Parkinson thinks Premier League is achievable with Wrexham
In a recent interview with FourFourTwo, Parkinson revealed that he thinks Wrexham can one day become a Premier League outfit, citing the Luton Town case study.
He said:
“We’re certainly not looking any further than the next game, but I said recently that, eventually, I don’t think the Premier League is impossible – look at Luton Town.
“They got there with a brilliant structure behind the scenes, they gradually put building blocks in place, they made good decisions and got their rewards.”
Like Wrexham, Luton were once in the National League. But the Hatters went on to earn four promotions in 10 seasons, winning the Championship play-off final last season to land themselves in the Premier League for this campaign.
And Luton haven’t spent heavily in the past few months either.
They’re certainly a club with structure and longer-term ambitions and Parkinson wants Wrexham to abide by that mantra as well.
He added:
“There are clubs who try to achieve success and put themselves at huge risk financially by doing that, but this club isn’t one of them.
“The owners and myself want to create a club that’s strong for years to come. If we keep recruiting well, I hope there’s more to come.”
Premier League is ambitious, but like Parkinson says, not impossible
Of course, the Premier League is a distant dream for Wrexham right now.
But like Parkinson says, it’s not impossible, and there are enough case studies to go off; Luton Town for one, and Bournemouth another.
Once a team has momentum, it can be tough to stop them, and with the right investment and planning, there could be on stopping Wrexham.
They’ve more than settled back into life in the Football League and should they achieve another promotion this season, they’d be another step closer to the end goal of the Premier League.
It might still take a long time. But the club are certainly on track and with increased investment in the club, there’s no guessing where Wrexham might be in five or 10 year’s time.
