Wrexham have enjoyed enormous growth over the last four years, with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bringing success both on and off the pitch.

The new season is now just weeks away, and Wrexham will kick off as a Championship club.

When Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in 2021, we knew the Hollywood duo had big plans for success at the STōK Cae Ras.

Few could have realistically expected Wrexham to be in the Championship just four years after the takeover, though.

Wrexham experienced some dark days in the National League, but now sit just one promotion away from the Premier League.

Brilliant results on the pitch have been matched by huge exposure off the pitch, all thanks to McElhenney, Reynolds and ‘Welcome to Wrexham’.

Rob Faulkner on Wrexham rivalling the Kardashians

Wrexham almost immediately became worldwide news the second McElhenney and Reynolds finalised their takeover.

The duo weren’t content with just making headlines off their existing global stardom, as they instead pushed Wrexham to the masses.

The ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary series has charted Wrexham’s rise from the takeover to the most recent promotion out of League One.

American fans have gone wild for ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, sparking two pre-season tours of the United States in recent years.

Wrexham have also enjoyed major success in Australia, which resulted in a pre-season tour Down Under this summer.

Wrexham’s Chief Business and Communications Officer Rob Faulkner has spoken about Wrexham’s growth during a talk at MAD//Fest London 2025.

Faulkner highlighted the booming success of ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, drawing attention to the Emmy awards and its status within FX.

Faulkner then addressed just how successful ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has been in Australia, pointing out that it is second only to ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’.

Now, we can’t ever have imagined talking about Wrexham and the Kardashians in the same sentence.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner have been stars of the reality TV world for more than a decade now, but Faulkner highlighted that McElhenney and Reynolds have given Wrexham the reach to compete with them.

“It’s won eight Emmy awards, it’s the number one most watched docuseries in FX history and, anecdotally, because we’re going to Australia and New Zealand, in Australia it’s the second most-popular reality docuseries behind the Kardashians, so that’s the reach that the documentary has given the club,” said Faulkner.

Rob Faulkner highlights the market Wrexham haven’t even discussed

Wrexham have cracked the American market and appear to have done the same in Australia now.

Faulkner certainly seems to be pleased with Wrexham’s progress in key markets, but one area has not yet been explored.

Faulkner admitted that Wrexham have not even looked into expanding into Asia yet, despite being a big market for many other clubs.

“It’s not yet distributed yet in Asia, so that will be an interesting one,” said Faulkner.

“For those of you that are sports fans, football fans, big brand fans and talking of Asia as a market, we’ve not even looked at Asia yet, as a club,” he added.

We have seen Manchester United focus on Asia in years gone by, even going as far as signing the likes of Dong Fangzhuo, Park Ji-sung and Shinji Kagawa.

They may not have been entirely commercial signings, but United’s popularity in Asia certainly made those signings an even bigger deal.

Australia has clearly been the focus for Wrexham in 2025, and perhaps Asia will move into the plans come 2026 or beyond.
