Wrexham fans should be keeping a close eye on what Rob McElhenney does after every game at the Racecourse Ground.

Rob McElhenney, along with fellow co-owner Ryan Reynolds, took control of the Red Dragons from their Supporters Trust in February 2021.

Wrexham finished eighth in the National League during the Hollywood duo’s first season at the club, leading to manager Dean Keates being revealed of his duties.

Phil Parkinson was then appointed as manager in July 2021 following successful spells with the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Bradford City.

Parkinson was tasked with getting Wrexham out of the National League and back into the EFL, something he achieved in the 2022/23 campaign.

The success has continued to flow in Wales, with another promotion secured in the 2023/24 season.

McElhenney and Reynolds are now watching their recently-bought side compete in League One for the first time in their history.

Rob McElhenney reveals bizarre post-match Wrexham tradition

The newly-promoted outfit kicked off the current campaign with a 3-2 win at the Racecourse Ground.

McElhenney and Reynolds were in attendance to watch Wrexham beat Wycombe Wanderers and there is a good chance the former of the duo took something from the ground after the match.

Pre and post-match traditions are not uncommon in football but McElhenney’s is pretty bizarre.

Speaking on the Men in Blazers podcast, the 47-year-old revealed that after ‘every game’ he attends, he takes a piece of the pitch home with him.

He said: “This was a gift that Kaitlin got me, every game I take a little piece of the pitch with me, I just put it in my pocket.

“So this marks all of the special games, most recently League One promotion [from League Two] – Wrexham 6, Forest Green 0, April 13, 2024.

“I actually wasn’t there for that game because we weren’t sure whether that was going to be the clincher.

“So I had Humphrey [Ker] grab me a bunch of grass and he put it in a plastic bag for me.

“Every other game I’ve been to, and it goes back to our first home win – Wrexham 5, Maidstone 0, August 20, 2022.”

Rob McElhenney could have more to celebrate this season

McElhenney is clearly keen to mark every major Wrexham milestone with a souvenir.

And at present, it appears Parkinson is on course to deliver another momentous occasion that the Always Sunny star will no doubt want to mark by taking a piece of the pitch.

After five games of the 2024/25 campaign, the Red Dragons are sat top of League One and yet to lose a game.

Wrexham face Birmingham City in a huge clash on Monday evening that could now prove pivotal in the promotion race.

It is still very early in the season but the club are on course for a historic third promotion on the spin this term.
