Wrexham duo crack jokes about snubbing Ollie Rathbone as ‘Burnley mob’ established

Jay Rodriguez was the hero as Wrexham secured a major win in the League One promotion race, beating Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday.

The end of the season is now in sight, and every game carries enormous significance for Wrexham.

A third straight promotion is a real possibility for Wrexham with just eight games to play.

Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday to move three points ahead of third-placed Wycombe Wanderers.

Wycombe have a game in hand, but Wrexham hold that final automatic promotion spot.

Jay Rodriguez and Matty James on Ollie Rathbone

Striker Jay Rodriguez was the hero against Stockport as he scored the only goal of the game.

Rodriguez stepped up from the penalty spot with Stockport furious at Wrexham being given a spot kick.

The veteran forward saw Corey Addai save his penalty, but Rodriguez reacted quickly to fire home on his left foot.

Paul Merson praised Rodriguez for his quick thinking, tracking the ball from the moment it left his boot in order to snatch any rebound.

Rodriguez spoke to Wrexham Match Day Live after the final whistle, joining Matty James in being quizzed about the game.

The pair hail from similar areas; Rodriguez is a Burnley boy through and through, whilst James hails from nearby Bacup.

When asked about having an ‘East Lancashire Mafia’ at Wrexham, James and Rodriguez admitted that Ollie Rathbone is trying to join in.

Rathbone hails from Blackburn, but James joked that he and Rodriguez have been teaming up to ‘bully’ the midfielder.

“I think so, yeah, especially with Rathbone being from Blackburn,” said James when asked if their presence brings a ‘Lancashire spirit‘ to Wrexham.

“He’s trying to get involved with us,” said Rodriguez, suggesting that Rathbone hadn’t yet been allowed into the so-called East Lancashire Mafia.

“He’s getting bullied by the Burnley mob at the minute, that’s what it is,” added James, with the veteran duo clearly having fun with Rathbone.

Jay Rodriguez and Matty James could celebrate Burnley promotion

James previously told the Bristol Post that he is a Burnley fan, so it’s no surprise to see him and Rodriguez so close already.

Rathbone just has to grin and take the jokes right now, with Burnley enjoying a fine season.

The Clarets sit third in the Championship table and are seeking a promotion back to the Premier League.

Burnley beat bitter rivals Blackburn 1-0 in January too, so James and Rodriguez certainly have bragging rights.

James and Rodriguez could celebrate a double promotion soon enough, one with Wrexham and one as fans of Burnley.

That would be quite the end to the season for the two veterans, who will be right in Rathbone’s ear again if Burnley do win promotion.
