When do Wycombe Wanderers play their game in hand? Wrexham fans don’t have to wait long for key League One date

It’s been a brilliant weekend for Wrexham, but fans shouldn’t get carried away just yet, as Wycombe Wanderers still have one huge ace up their sleeves.

In defeating promotion rivals Stockport County on Saturday, Wrexham moved ahead of Wycombe in the League One table and strengthened their position in the race for second place.

A first Wrexham goal for Jay Rodriguez was enough to secure three points in a 1-0 win over Stockport at the Racecourse Ground, but the battle for promotion is far from over.

Supercomputers can predict the final outcome all they want, but all that really matters is what happens on the pitch over the next month and a half.

Wycombe Wanderers’ game in hand: Everything you need to know

The problem for Wrexham is that their run-in and Wycombe’s schedule look slightly different. The Chairboys have a game in hand still to play, and it could be absolutely decisive in this fascinating fight for promotion.

As things stand, Wrexham have played 38 games and have accrued 74 points. Wycombe, meanwhile, have played one game less, and are three points behind, though they have a superior goal difference.

Looking ahead, both teams are in action on March 29, April 1, and April 5. However, Wycombe then play again on April 8, versus fellow top six side Huddersfield Town, in a game that will level the playing field in terms of games played.

By that point, of course, either Wrexham or Wycombe could have slipped up and handed the other team a big advantage and that game in hand might be less significant than we expect.

But, assuming both teams win their next three matches, Wycombe would be able to jump back into second spot, and would know that their fate is in their own hands heading into the final five games of the season.

What do Wrexham have lined up between now and then?

Over the next two weeks (and a bit) Wrexham will play three games, knowing that any slip-up will be pounced upon by their rivals. It is absolutely crucial that the Red Dragons are still in second place by the time Wycombe take on Huddersfield, for the mental advantage more than anything.

The good news for Wrexham is, those next three games are relatively comfortable ones, albeit with a couple of away games on the horizon.

16th-placed Exeter City are up next, away from home. Then, Wrexham travel to Cambridge United to take on a team currently sitting in the relegation zone. After that, it’s a home tie against Burton Albion, who are just outside the bottom three.

Wrexham have been winning ‘ugly’ of late, and it’s honestly weirdly satisfying to see the team grinding out important wins and getting the job done. Nothing else matters at this stage of the season. Wrexham simply have to get three points.

They’ll have to keep fighting for those wins in the coming weeks and keep that pressure on Wycombe and Mike Dodds. Wrexham have the mental fortitude to get through this fight and come out on top. Do Wycombe have the same?
