Wrexham and Birmingham City clashed in a League One meeting on Thursday evening and fans have had a lot to say.

It was expected to be a tough game for Wrexham, who were aiming to keep their unbeaten run at the Racecourse Ground alive.

Things got off to an excellent start, however, with Ollie Rathbone stealing the headlines versus Birmingham City when he netted a thunderous effort early in the clash.

The Red Dragons’ lead did not last long though, with Lyndon Dykes putting the away team back on level terms in the 18th minute.

The first half was a pretty even affair but Wrexham probably felt they could have nabbed a winner in the second 45.

This comes despite Birmingham having a quality squad and spending a lot of money in the summer transfer window.

Wrexham fans mock Jay Stansfield after Birmingham City amid Max Cleworth praise

Birmingham smashed the League One transfer record over the summer when they signed Jay Stansfield from Fulham.

The forward did not have a great game on Thursday evening, however, and has now been mocked by Wrexham fans on social media.

One fan wrote: Forgot Jay Stansfield was playing, £15 million, you’re having a laugh.”

A second added: “We’ve turned Jay Stansfield into a 1 million pound player.”

Meanwhile, a number of Wrexham fans decided to praise Max Cleworth for keeping Stansfield quiet.

One wrote: “Max, you can take Stansfield out of your pocket now.”

Another stated: “Ask Stansfield if he knows who Max is. He will be having nightmares for weeks after last night’s performance and we let him know when he was subbed too. He was not a happy chappy.”

“Max Cleworth would have been worth over £15m then, because he went home with Stansfield in his pocket,” a third wrote.

A fourth added: “If Stansfield is worth £15m then Max Cleworth is worth at least £400 trillion in my opinion.”

While another claimed: “Cleworth had Stansfield under lock and key tonight didn’t he? Superb defensive performance.”

Wrexham record transfers

Birmingham are said to have paid £15m to Fulham for Stansfield’s services – a figure that completely dwarfs any money spent by Wrexham.

The Red Dragons are seen as a big-spending club since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over but their top-five record transfers don’t even scratch the surface of what the Blues paid out on just one star.

At present, the £590,000 paid to West Bromwich Albion for Modou Faal is Wrexham’s record transfer.

Ollie Rathbone takes second place with £500,000 paid out to Rotherham United.

Sebastian Revan, Ollie Palmer and Dan Scarr round out the top five, with all their fees combined not even adding up to £5m
