Wrexham avoid the tension of the League One play-offs, but for fans watching the Championship with curiosity this week, Coventry City’s defeat has led to a few happy faces.
Obviously, Wrexham supporters (and players and coaching staff) are now taking a great interest in what’s happening in the Championship.
Wrexham will be back in the second tier next season for the first time in 43 years, and suffice to say, the Red Dragons can’t wait to get going.
But, before we can look ahead to the 2025/26 campaign, there was the small matter of working out which teams will still be in the Championship.
Last night, at the Stadium of Light, Coventry City’s fate was sealed in the dying moments, and they will now be on the fixture list for Wrexham next season.

What Wrexham fans have said about Coventry City
Discussing the action from the Championship play-off semi-final on social media last night and this morning, Wrexham fans have admitted they’re actually quite happy to see Coventry remain in the second tier.
Fearless in Devotion’s account wrote: “Sad for Coventry to lose in such cruel fashion. But so excited to be going back there with Wrexham in The Championship next season, just 28 months after our FA Cup win as a National League side. Football eh.”
Among the replies, one fan said: “I can’t wait to go back in that away end, this time in a full stadium. Great ground and fantastic memories. Such a horrible way to lose though for Sky Blues fans.”
Referring to Wrexham’s win over Coventry in the FA Cup back in 2023, another added: “At least we now now know there’ll be at least one current championship team we know we can beat, hopefully there’ll be a few more. A lot’s changed since that cup clash, especially in terms of squads.”
There’s a lot of mutual respect between the two clubs, it seems, with another supporter replying, “Coventry are class, always had a soft spot for them since that FA Cup tie and how they acted.”
Even before the game, comments were made about the upcoming clash between Wrexham and Coventry, with Craig Jones joking: “You can see the tension and anxiety etched on the faces of these Sunderland and Coventry fans. All currently wondering whether it will be them fighting to get one of the 1,284 away allocation at The Racecourse. Nervous times.”

Wrexham’s history with Coventry City
Coventry and Wrexham have not met many times in their histories, with just 12 games between the two sides over the years.
Sadly, it’s the Sky Blues who dominate overall, with eight wins to Wrexham’s three, and one draw to boost.

But, of course, it is Wrexham who have the more recent success, defeating Coventry in a 4-3 thriller at the CBS Arena back in January 2023 in the FA Cup.
It was part of that enthralling cup run, which ended after defeat to Sheffield United.
Now, Wrexham can look forward to playing Coventry again next season, as well as taking on three teams they’ve never played in the league before.
