Wrexham fans caught singing Chester-inspired chant as supporters mention bitter rivals in Championship classic

Wrexham supporters were in fine voice at the weekend, and they were found singing about bitter rivals Chester on their second-tier return.

Whilst the result did not go Wrexham’s way as they lost out to recently relegated Premier League side Southampton, it was still a brilliant moment for the Red Dragons as they took to the field in the Championship.

Wrexham have managed three successive promotions under Phil Parkinson, taking them from the National League to the Championship, something that had not been done before in history.

Since the takeover led by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, the Red Dragons have hit new heights, both on the pitch and commercially. From going to playing the likes of Boreham Wood and Gateshead, Wrexham are now pitted against former Premier League winners in the second tier.

However, Red Dragons fans haven’t forgotten their roots after they delivered a chant about historic and bitter rivals Chester.

What Wrexham fans sang about Southampton and Chester in Championship opener

Wrexham’s rivalry with Chester spans many years, with both sides often competing with each other in the National League.

A total of 13 miles separates the bitter rivals from each side of the Welsh-English border, and despite Wrexham outgrowing their noisy neighbours, they still hold a grudge against the Blues.

On Wrexham’s return to the second tier, they found themselves ahead against Southampton, to which the supporters, as spotted by The Athletic, then began a rendition of a chant aimed at Chester.

30 minutes into the tie, Wrexham fans chanted: “Are you Chester in disguise?”

Wrexham’s record vs bitter rivals Chester

In the club’s history, Wrexham have won more encounters of the cross-border derby than Chester, getting the win on 66 occasions in comparison to the Blues’ 49 victories.

It is unlikely that we will see any ties between the two clubs in the near future, unless Chester are able to manage a spectacular run in the FA Cup, and somehow manage to draw the Red Dragons.

Chester FC currently find themselves in the National League North, which is a division below the National League, where Wrexham were when Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac took over the club.

Hopefully, the Blues can replicate a meteoric rise on the level of Wrexham’s so the new wave of Red Dragons supporters can feel the excitement in a cross-border derby.
