Wrexham fans have lavished one player with praise during their opening-weekend clash with Southampton.

Phil Parkinson shocked fans prior to kick-off with his team selection.

Danny Ward started in goal, while James McClean and Ryan Longman were both benched.

However, Wrexham started on the front foot and took the lead, scoring their first second-tier goal in 43 years.

Kieffer Moore was fouled by defender Ronnie Edwards after bursting into the Saints’ box, and a penalty was awarded.

New signing Josh Windass stepped up from 12 yards to convert in the 22nd minute.

Wrexham fans react to Josh Windass vs Southampton

As well as scoring a crucial goal, Windass created so much and gave Wrexham a real threat from set pieces.

The Red Dragons’ supporters have since praised the midfielder, while Sheffield Wednesday fans have had a lot to say about him as well.

One Wrexham fan wrote: “Windass been unreal today.”

A second tweeted: “I —— love Joshua Windass.”

A Sheffield Wednesday fan reacted to his goal by writing: “Windass scores a league goal for his new club before Wednesday signs a new first-team player. Wild.”

A fourth tweeted: “Windass = proper baller. Moore’s been so-so, but Coady? Absolute monster at the back. Let’s go, Wrexham!!”

“Windass bagging for Wrexham, Gassama smashing it for Rangers, #swfc fans must feel sick,” stated another.

A sixth added: “New lads look fantastic. O’Brien looks a class above and Moore and Windass are a handful.”

And another Wrexham supporter added: “Windass is a proper baller.”

Josh Windass could be Wrexham’s best signing

Wrexham gave Windass Paul Mullin’s shirt number for the game against Southampton.

He had big shoes to fill given the latter’s importance to the Dragons, but he was superb on his debut.

The fact that Wrexham were able to sign Windass for free makes it even more impressive, and while we have only seen one game so far, he could well prove to be their best signing this year.
