Wrexham face a trip to Deepdale after being drawn against Preston North End in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Wrexham supporters who left early against Hull City on Tuesday night really should have known better.

Phil Parkinson’s Wrexham side have produced so many late comebacks, and that was the case once again on Tuesday night.

Wrexham were 3-1 down against Hull City heading into injury time, but Ollie Palmer wasn’t about to give up.

Palmer buried two brilliant headers in added time, handing Wrexham a 3-3 draw against Hull as the game went to penalties.

Wrexham scored all five spot kicks to book a place in the second round, with Palmer emerging as the unlikely hero amid doubts over his future.

Wrexham fans on Preston North End clash

Palmer has been told he can leave Wrexham, and it’s unclear whether he will even be in the squad for the next Carabao Cup game.

Wrexham have been drawn against Preston North End, and will head to Lancashire in the week commencing 25 August.

A place in the third round is up for grabs, and Wrexham will certainly fancy a positive result at Deepdale.

Wrexham supporters have taken to social media to react to Wednesday’s draw, with some happy to be heading to PNE for the first time in many years.

Some just want to see Wrexham win at Deepdale, but many are frustrated at facing another Championship side having just seen off Hull.

Fans want to see Wrexham against Premier League opposition and believe Parkinson should play the ‘reserves’ again, just as he did against Hull.

Wrexham history against Preston North End

Wrexham and PNE faced off regularly in the 1970s and 1980s, but meetings have become a little less common since then.

As noted by 11v11, the two teams didn’t meet at all between May 1987 and August 1996, but meetings were more regular in the late 1990s.

Wrexham’s last game against PNE came on 25 March 2000, which ended in a 1-0 win for North End.

In fact, Wrexham haven’t beaten PNE since 25 October 1997, beating the Lilywhites 1-0 at Deepdale.

Six of the last seven meetings between the two sides have ended in PNE wins, and Wrexham would love to end that run in the Carabao Cup, more than 25 years since the two teams last locked horns.
