Wrexham find out FA Cup first round opponents as Phil Parkinson faces League Two clash

Wrexham will hope for a decent FA Cup run this season and have now learned the first round opponents after Monday’s draw.

Wrexham are flying high in League One but the attention has turned to the FA Cup this evening.

Phil Parkinson enjoyed a strong run in the 2022-23 FA Cup campaign, reaching the fourth round before falling to Sheffield United after a replay.

Wrexham dumped Coventry City out in the third round that year and enjoyed more third round success against Shrewsbury Town last season.

The fourth round was the end for Wrexham once again though, losing 4-1 at the hands of Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Many lower league clubs would love to draw Wrexham, not just because of the chance to dump Parkinson’s side out of the competition, but also because of the increased exposure and publicity around playing Wrexham.

Wrexham find out FA Cup opponents

The draw has now been made and Wrexham will be heading to take on Harrogate Town away from home.

The two sides met in the FA Cup in November 2021 too, with Harrogate running out 2-1 winners over Wrexham on that day.

This tie came just months after Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham, so this was really the start of Wrexham being a ‘plum tie’ in the draw.

The two sides met twice in League Two last season, drawing 2-2 in Yorkshire before a 0-0 draw back at the STōK Cae Ras in March.

Harrogate boss Simon Weaver admitted last season that Wrexham fans gave him ‘banter’ on the sidelines, calling his team ‘mid-table rubbish’.

The two sides will now meet again with Wrexham travelling to Wetherby Road for a big tie.

When do Premier League clubs join the FA Cup?

The first round is when League One and League Two clubs get involved in the FA Cup, but there is still a wait until Premier League and Championship sides join.

Clubs from the top two tiers don’t play until the third round, which takes place in January.

Wrexham will be desperate to get past Harrogate and then make sure that there is a chance for a huge third round tie.

Wrexham are one of the big names in the draw at this stage but the truly huge pay days are a while off yet.
