Wrexham are back in the League One automatic promotion places after beating Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Wrexham just can’t stop winning 1-0 right now.

Phil Parkinson watched on as Wrexham beat Stockport County 1-0 on Saturday afternoon with Jay Rodriguez bagging the only goal.

Rodriguez was praised by Paul Merson as he reacted quickly to score when Corey Addai saved his first-half penalty.

That proved to be the winning goal as Wrexham secured yet another 1-0 victory – just as against Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham have once again overtaken Wycombe to take second place, but the Chairboys have a game in hand.

Wrexham hero Darren Ferguson boosts Phil Parkinson

The win over Stockport was a real boost for two reasons.

Not only did Wrexham reclaim second place with another win, but the victory also kept Stockport away from the automatic promotion spots.

A County win would have taken them just three points behind Wrexham and right into the mix for second place.

Instead, County now sit nine points adrift of Wrexham and look unlikely to catch Parkinson’s side.

Wrexham hero Darren Ferguson provided a major boost too as his Peterborough United side beat Charlton Athletic 3-0.

Ferguson was a fan favourite at Wrexham in his playing days and saw his Posh side beat Charlton 3-0 in a convincing victory.

The Addicks had been on a great run but that defeat – combined with Wrexham winning – now leaves them eight points adrift of Wrexham.

Peterborough are Ferguson’s only focus but Wrexham fans will be delighted with his helping hand this weekend.

Darren Ferguson on beating Charlton

The result essentially means that barring a major turn of results, the race for second place is now down to just Wrexham and Wycombe.

That straight shootout won’t be easy but Wrexham certainly appear to have fewer concerns about teams emerging from behind.

Ferguson has commented on his victory, telling the Peterborough Telegraph that he ‘had a feeling’ that his side would beat Charlton.

Ferguson hailed his side for cutting Charlton apart and ultimately sealing a win to move further clear of the drop zone.

“It was an important game for us and I had a feeling we would deliver a performance,” said Ferguson.

“We had to get things right in possession against a team that is very aggressive, but if we could beat the press I expected us to have too much pace for them and so it proved. For us to play with the confidence to pass through them like we did was very encouraging. The players look like they are enjoying their football which is very important,” he added.

Wrexham fans may have been cursing Ferguson after his Peterborough side secured a passage to the EFL Trophy final at Parkinson’s expense.

Ferguson has done Wrexham a favour this weekend though and he will be looking to beat Birmingham City in the EFL Trophy final next month.
