Wrexham produced another gritty display to earn a vital three points with a 1-0 win over Stockport County.

After a shaky start to the game where Stockport dominated possession and territory the game spun when James McClean’s header hit a flailing Stockport arm in the penalty area.

That gave the opportunity for Jay Rodriguez to score his first Wrexham goal from the penalty spot and after his initial spot kick was saved, Rodriguez was on hand to score the rebound.

It was a huge moment for the former England international and fans will now be hoping that he can relax after breaking his goal scoring duck and start producing better performances at the Racecourse Ground.

Wrexham fans react to Jay Rodriguez

Rodriguez’s first goal for the club may not have come in the most glamorous way and he was even slightly fortunate but the importance of the moment was clear for all to see.

Wrexham fans took to X to react to his first goal, one fan wrote: “Whilst it was a rebound pen it’s a big goal and hopefully this’ll give him the confidence now he has first goal for club coyr.”

Another fan wasn’t convinced however and wrote: “I’m not sure why he took the penalty? I just knew he would miss. Fair play he scored the follow up but I still question why he’s starting.”

The general consensus was one of delight for Rodriguez though, one fan wrote: “Get in there Rodriguez, now go and show us what you can really do.”

Wrexham fans would still like to see Paul Mullin replace Rodriguez

Fans have demanded an explanation for Paul Mullin’s absence after Phil Parkinson left out the striker for the tenth consecutive League One matchday squad.

Mullin has struggled for form this season and had a shin injury back at the end of January but is fit now and cannot force his way into the plans.

Many believe that Mullin would be a better suited partner for Sam Smith with his intelligence on the ball and ability to link the midfield and attack.

However, Rodriguez is now off the mark and the Red Dragons have picked up 22 points in ten games since his arrival in North Wales and those numbers cannot be argued against.
