Wrexham player ratings vs Burton, Elliot Lee does something crazy as two players get 8/10

Wrexham faced off with Burton Albion in a League One meeting on Saturday afternoon at the Pirelli Stadium.

Wrexham headed into the game looking to make it four wins in a row in the league.

The Red Dragons have been excellent at home this season and have won three games on the spin at the Racecourse Ground.

They most recently saw off Barnsley by one goal to nil on Tuesday, moving them to within a point of League One leaders, Wycombe Wanderers.

But with several of the sides around them having games in hand, it was imperative Wrexham continued their winning ways despite facing a tricky away fixture this weekend.

It was a pretty dire first 45 from both sides, with the poor weather clearly having a major impact on the game.

However, Wrexham started the second half much better and eventually took the lead in the 65th minute when Elliot Lee, wind-assisted, scored from a corner.

That proved to be enough to hand the Red Dragons the three points and keep them second in League One.

Here’s how the players rated –

Mark Howard – 6

Had a very quiet afternoon but dealt with the limited threat to his goal very well.

Max Cleworth – 6

Solid defensively and was very positive going forward, producing a number of good lofted balls to try and get his side moving forward.

Eoghan O’Connell – 8

Was put up against the rapid Rumarn Burrell on Saturday but despite being a lot slower than the striker, he used his experience to largely keep him at bay.

Lewis Brunt – 7

Another solid showing from the former Leicester City man, moving the ball well despite the poor pitch and winning most of his duels.

Ryan Barnett – 8

His ability to whip quality balls into the Wrexham strikers was hampered somewhat by the weather conditions but still threatened a few times.

Matty James – 6

A quiet afternoon from the usually lively James. Didn’t do an awful lot wrong but like most players, saw his game slowed down a lot by the weather.

Andy Cannon – 6

Was solid defensively and made some key tackles to stop Burton from playing through the middle but lacked the passing ability of the man he replaced in the side, George Dobson.

Ollie Rathbone – 6

Phil Parkinson will have wanted more from the midfielder after such positive displays of late. He struggled to provide the attacking threat we have seen from him in previous games in large periods of the 90.

Sebastian Revan – 6

Was a pretty anonymous showing from the second-choice left-back, who didn’t do a lot wrong but offered nowhere near the threat we normally see from James McClean.

Elliot Lee – 8

Lee started out of position up front once more and fans may be wondering why at this point. He lacks the finishing ability of a proper striker and is clearly much more effective as an attacking midfielder. Lee made up for his lack of attacking threat from open play by, pretty insanely, scoring from a corner.

Ollie Palmer – 7

Palmer was pretty quiet for long periods of the match, struggling to connect with Lee once more and hardly testing the Burton keeper.

Substitutes

Steven Fletcher – 5

Replaced Palmer late on and was a real physical presence, throwing his weight about and bulling Burton defender.

Paul Mullin – 3

Another chance to prove himself from the bench but missed a major chance late on, making it now 17 games with just one goal in the league.

Thomas O’Connor – 5

Brought on to help see out the tie and maintain the clean sheet, which Wrexham did.
