Wrexham may regret letting one player leave the club for free amid Paul Mullin’s struggles this season.

Paul Mullin joined Wrexham from Cambridge United on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

The now 30-year-old proved to be one of the greatest signing in the club’s history.

Mullin found the net a staggering 26 times in 38 National League matches during his debut campaign at the Racecourse Ground.

The Liverpool-born star went on to end the following two campaigns as the Red Dragons’ top scorer.

He is also Wrexham’s all-time leading goalscorer with 103 – a record that’s unlikely to be broken anytime soon.

However, it is fair to say that 2024/25, so far at least, has not been the striker’s season.

Mullin impressed Wrexham fans against Barnsley when he came off the bench in midweek but he currently has just one league goal in 16 appearances and three in 20 across all competitions.

Wrexham flop Louis Lloyd outperforming Paul Mullin

Louis Lloyd joined Wrexham on a free transfer in November 2022 after being released by Shrewsbury Town just a few months earlier.

However, the now 21-year-old failed to have any real impact during his time at the Racecourse.

In fact, he failed to make a single appearance for the Red Dragons’ senior side before being allowed to leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

Llyod then made the move to Welsh outfit Caernarfon and scored 10 and assisted four in 35 matches across 2023/24.

This term, though, the versatile forward is playing some of the best football of his career to date.

The Welshman has six goals in 17 league matches this season so far – five more than Mullin has managed and at least one more than any other Wrexham player.

He’s clearly a very talented player, it’s just a shame things never worked out for him under Phil Parkinson.

What Louis Llyod said about Wrexham striker Paul Mullin

While Llyod spent less than a year at Wrexham, he was able to work alongside Mullin during that time.

And when previously speaking on the Rob.Ryan.Red podcast, he mentioned the lessons that he was trying to take from the club’s record goalscorer.

He said: “All of the strikers, watching them in training is key for me – taking little things from them, seeing what they do to help make myself better.

“I can recall one moment, just doing a shooting practice with Mulls. I was wondering how he looks at the goal before he shoots, and he was like ‘I don’t’. I was like, ‘oh’. I thought ‘what?’. He doesn’t look at it, he just knows where it is.

“It might take me a bit of time to get that one – a few air shots trying to practice that one, but it’s just little things and trying to put them in your game.”

Wrexham are back in League One action against Burton Albion on Saturday, with Mullin no doubt desperate to end his goal drought in that match.
