Wrexham are heading not the final weeks of the League One season and the attention will soon turn to Phil Parkinson’s summer preparations.

The League One promotion is really into its final stretch now, and Wrexham remain in the hunt for second place.

Wycombe Wanderers may have a game in hand on Wrexham, but Phil Parkinson currently sits three points clear in second place.

Wrexham may be preparing for life in the Championship this summer, and pre-season preparations will already be in mind.

Transfers will take most of the headlines, with Wrexham already looking to sign Tom Lawrence with his Rangers contract running down.

Pre-season fixtures will grab attention too, though, and Wrexham may have one significant friendly in mind ahead of the summer.

Wrexham expected to face Melbourne Victory in Australia

We have become used to seeing Wrexham heading to North America for pre-season games against the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea.

Shaun Harvey admitted learning lessons from those stateside trips, but Wrexham may now head Down Under instead.

9News in Australia report that Wrexham are ‘almost certainly’ set to play against Melbourne Victory in a pre-season friendly.

Reporter Tom Morris claims that Wrexham’s visit is now ‘highly likely’ and ultimately an ‘amazing coup’ for the local era.

Adding ‘pencil it in’ on social media, Morris appears confident that Wrexham will be heading to Victoria to take on one of the biggest A-League names.

“Wrexham, the club made famous by Ryan Reynolds, is highly likely to be playing a game in July against Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium,” said Morris.

“It’s an amazing coup for Visit Victoria if they can get it done and I expect they will. This is almost certainly happening … they have taken the world by storm,” he added.

Four-time A-League Championship winners and three-time A-League Premiership winners, Melbourne Victory can count the likes of Ange Postecoglou, Kevin Muscat and Steve Kean as former managers.

Currently sitting fourth in the A-League, Melbourne Victory are captained by former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Roderick Miranda and will pose a stern pre-season test for Wrexham.

Ryan Reynolds influence clear

Morris noted that the proposed friendly will take place at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

That isn’t Melbourne Victory’s usual home; AAMI Park holds around 30,000 fans whereas Marvel Stadium can hold closer to 60,000 fans.

Melbourne Victory have played there before, but the stadium is predominantly used for Australian rules football, as well as cricket, rugby league, rugby union and concerts.

Moving the game to Marvel Stadium not only allows for more fans to attend the game, but also brings the influence of Ryan Reynolds into the picture.

Marvel Stadium is named that way due to a sponsorship agreement with Walt Disney and Marvel, even boasting a Marvel retail store on-site.

Wrexham co-owner Reynolds plays the role of ‘Deadpool’, one of the biggest characters in the Marvel Universe, and having that tie-in with this Wrexham game would be a huge marking opportunity.

Wrexham fans will await confirmation before booking flights to Australia, but an exciting trip appears to be on the cards this summer.
