McElhenney believes Wrexham will enjoy more success in the future, but he must be on top of the world with his 2025 so far.
We know that McElhenney’s true love is the Philadelphia Eagles.
Philadelphia born and bred, McElhenney’s lifelong love for the Eagles brought him an incredible night earlier this year.
The Eagles convincingly won the Super Bowl, hammering the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans.
If you had asked McElhenney for a dream 2025 earlier this year, he would surely have said for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl and Wrexham to win another promotion.
Here we are; as May begins, McElhenney has already seen his two teams achieve glory this year.
Sport is unrelenting, though, and we will see Wrexham head up to the Championship and the Eagles begin a new NFL season as they look to retain their crown.
McElhenney will be dreaming of more success to come later in the day, but it’s difficult to imagine how 2025 could have gone any better for him from a sporting perspective.
Rob McElhenney once cursed his teams finishing second
This double success story will mean so much to McElhenney given that he has previously spoken of his frustration at supporting teams just missing out on glory.
Fans may remember McElhenney speaking on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, Season 2, Episode 5, remarking on how he was sick of being a runner-up.
McElhenney’s pain stretched across football, American Football and baseball, leaving him desperate for some first-place finishes.
“The last 365 days, the teams that I have supported have come in second place in the National League: Wrexham. In the FA Trophy: Wrexham men’s. In the women’s league: Wrexham, second place. The Philadelphia Union, they lost in the Championship; second place. Oh, and I was there, by the way,” said McElhenney.
“The Philadelphia Phillies, who lost in the World Series; second place. I was there, too. In fact, I caught the first pitch. And the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost in the Super Bowl. And, yes, I was there as well.
“Coming in second means that you lost first. That’s what coming in second is, and it doesn’t feel great. It feels almost more devastating than coming in 10th, where the expectation wasn’t there,” he added.
Wrexham may have finished second this season, but it still brings promotion and all the celebrations of finishing first.
Seeing your team win trophies and achieve promotions is a rare thing; some of us don’t see it all that often.
McElhenney has now had two doses of that euphoria this season and this 2025 success will surely make up for all that previous disappointment.
