How Rob McElhenney reacted to Eagles Super Bowl win in comparison to Wrexham promotion makes his true sporting allegiances clear

The entire sporting world had its eyes on the Super Bowl on Sunday night, and we all know Rob McElhenney had skin in the game thanks to his love for the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Wrexham owner has never been shy about his affiliation with the NFL team, so he was understandably over the moon when the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl final this season.

As a Philadelphia native, seeing the Eagles succeed has always been one of the top priorities for Rob McElhenney. But, since taking over at Wrexham four years ago, the Hollywood star has had his allegiances split between American football and what the US folk would describe as ‘soccer’.

So, which team does McElhenney love the most? If you’re a Wrexham fan, you may want to look away now or risk getting your heart broken.

Philadelphia Eagles give Rob McElhenney one of the ‘best nights’ of his life

Super Bowl LIX saw the Eagles take on reigning champions Kansas City Chiefs in a thrilling encounter to wrap up the season, which saw McElhenney’s team prevail in a 40-22 win on the night.

Earlier on Sunday, McElhenney tweeted: “Dangerous tweet. This is top 5 greatest days of my life. 8pm on a Sunday.” That was before Philadelphia had even started the game, so you can imagine his feelings after the victory.

Again taking to Twitter/X, McElhenney said: “Not so dangerous anymore. Top five best nights of my life. Fly Eagle Fly.”

The Eagles had previously won the Super Bowl back in 2017, defeating the New England Patriots to land their first ever title in the franchise’s history.

So, that’s two of the best moments of Rob’s life pinned down, surely. Considering he and his wife have two children, that’s probably another two highlights locked in, too. So, hopefully one of the other five memorable nights is reserved for Wrexham’s success over the last few years.

Rob McElhenney had a lot less to say about Wrexham’s promotion

After Wrexham’s promotion from League Two in 2024, Ryan Reynolds took to Twitter/X to say: “Congrats to Wrexham and to my co-chairman in crime. Double up the town! This is the ride of our lives.”

That’s a pretty emphatic reaction from the Deadpool star, and exactly what football fans would expect from a suitably passionate owner. However, McElhenney was less descriptive about his own feelings regarding that promotion.

In stark contrast, McElhenney simply posted: “No words”. Granted, he included a love heart emoji with the post, and we’ll forgive him for being speechless after his beloved club secured a second successive promotion.

Still, comparing his reactions to the Super Bowl win and to Wrexham’s success, it’s fairly clear that the Eagles dominate McElhenney’s heart when it comes to sport.

However, he has previously spoken about the ‘great joy’ he gets from being a part of Wrexham’s journey. He even takes snippets of grass from the pitch every time he visits the Racecourse Ground, as a precious keepsake of the memories he makes there.

Thankfully, there’s room for both teams in McElhenney’s life, and we would never doubt just how committed he is to the Wrexham project.
