Wrexham set to face Wigan Athletic star who agreed pay cut instead of joining McElhenney and Reynolds project

Wrexham are back in League One action on Sunday afternoon as Shaun Maloney and Wigan Athletic make the trip to the STōK Cae Ras.

Phil Parkinson is looking to make this a festive period to remember after Wrexham’s 2-1 win over Blackpool on Boxing Day.

Frustrating draws against Cambridge United and Bristol Rovers were put on the back burner as a late Steven Fletcher penalty secured the win.

There is just no rest at this time of year and Wrexham are right back in action again on Sunday afternoon.

Wigan Athletic make the journey to North Wales on Sunday afternoon and are in decent form having claimed seven points from their last three League One games.

Wrexham to face former transfer target

Wrexham remain unbeaten at home this season and will be looking to keep that run going on Sunday afternoon.

Shaun Maloney’s Latics will be tough opposition and Phil Parkinson will be more than aware about the quality of one player.

Wigan defender Jason Kerr is a man in the heart of the Latics back line, racking up 21 league starts from 21 games this season whilst captaining the side.

Wrexham fans may recall Kerr’s name from the summer transfer window with Parkinson keen to lure him over to the STōK Cae Ras.

Reports back in May suggested that Wrexham were pushing to sign Kerr with Parkinson a big fan of the centre back.

Less than a week later, Wigan mocked Wrexham by using a clip of Ryan Reynolds to confirm that Kerr was staying put.

Kerr slipped through the net for Wrexham and, barring any late issue, will be primed to start for Wigan and attempt to frustrate Parkinson once again – this time on the pitch rather than in the transfer market.

Jason Kerr accepted Wigan Athletic pay cut

Kerr not only snubbed the chance to join the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds project at Wrexham, but even took a pay cut.

Wigan Today claim that Kerr accepted a wage reduction to stay at The Brick Community Stadium and rejected ‘rival clubs in League One’.

We can only assume that Wrexham were one of those teams with Kerr committing his future to the Latics after a major ACL injury in 2022.

Kerr may have felt a duty to repay Wigan’s faith in him after that injury blow and has praised the club’s medical staff whilst speaking to Wigan Today.

“I have to say, the physios here have been amazing with me, they look after me every day,” said Kerr. “And I need to do a lot more than what I used to, in order to get out there on the field

“Before the injury, I used to just rock up, warm up and that would be it. Now I spend a lot more time getting ready for training, getting ready for games, but that’s what I have to do and I’m happy to do that,” he added.

Kerr will hope to avoid injury before and during Sunday’s clash and will be looking to keep the likes of Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer quiet as Wrexham chase another win.
