Eagle-eyed Wrexham fans will have spotted some rather unfamiliar mascots at the STōK Cae Ras in recent weeks.
We are used to seeing Wrex the Dragon at Wrexham home games and one Super Bowl advert even showed Anthony Hopkins taking that role.
Yet when Wrexham lost to Tranmere Rovers in March, there were a couple of US sporting mascots in attendance.
The ‘Phillie Phanatic’ – the mascot of Rob McElhenney’s beloved Philadelphia Phillies in Major League Baseball – and Mets mascots ‘Mr and Mrs Met’ were both at the STōK Cae Ras against Tranmere.
The mascots were seen in a race on the sidelines and the reason given at the time was that it was related to MLB’s London Series.
The Phillies take on the Mets at the London Stadium on June 20th and Wrexham’s popularity in the States contributed to being involved in an advert for the game.
That advert has now been released to the world – and it features a Wrexham star.
Ollie Palmer features in Rob McElhenney advert
Wrexham co-chairman McElhenney has taken to social media to share the advert.
McElhenney notes that Wrexham shared their love of football with him, so he wanted to share his love of baseball with Wrexham.
The advert – attempting to attract fans to this summer’s London Series – shows a baseball commentator covering Wrexham action alongside the legendary Mark Griffiths.
We also see Wayne Jones, the owner of The Turf pub as well as Jimmy Kimmel and even Wrexham goalkeeper Mark Howard.
The star of the show is Wrexham striker Ollie Palmer though as the advert ends with Palmer stepping up from the bench to fire home a penalty.
Wrexham fans are shown celebrating with Palmer before McElhenney calls on fans to buy tickets for this summer’s baseball extravaganza.
Another Wrexham advert to add to the list
Wrexham’s profile has grown enormously since McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds arrived at the club.
That has resulted in a thriving social media presence, a successful TV documentary series and
Paul Mullin was featured in an advert alongside Reynolds for 1Password back in 2022, receiving an earful from Reynolds in the process.
United Airlines, STōK Cold Brew Coffee and Ally have had Wrexham-themed promotional videos featuring McElhenney, Reynolds and key players after coming on board as sponsors.
This is just the latest example of Wrexham’s enormous profile right now and whilst it’s usually Mullin as the star player in these adverts, it was Palmer’s turn this time.
