Wrexham star, Paul Mullin has admitted that he is still suffering following the injury he sustained in pre-season against Manchester United.

Over the summer, Wrexham travelled to San Deigo to face Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in front of 34,000 fans.

Although United played a weakened team, Phil Parkinson put out a strong XI which almost mirrors their recent league team’s.

The Reds were able to secure a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Elliot Lee, Sam Dalby and Aaron Hayden in a positive day for the club.

Although everyone was pleased with the result, there was a dark cloud which took away from there being too much positivity. Nathan Bishop rushed out of his goal and collided with Wrexham’s Mullin who went down and stayed down.

What has Paul Mullin said?

The Welshman was down for over seven minutes and needed a mask in order to breathe. It was reported by The Guardian that he suffered a punctured lung in the game.

In an interview with The Athletic not long after the event, Mullin said: “I was trying to breathe in but nothing was happening. I couldn’t get air into my lungs. That’s when I knew it was bad. In that struggle for breath, with my lips turning blue, I accepted that this could be it for me.”

This kind of thing is hard to hear for Wrexham fans and football fans in general as it could of ended much worse. Although it was a genuine enough challenge, it proved to be very dangerous and something that needed to be learned from.

This week, Mullin has conducted yet another interview with The Athletic and has discussed THAT injury and its effects.

On that, he said: “I still get some pain now, after games. But during the games, it is always fine. Hopefully, now I can start to get back to where I was.”

Given how good the Reds striker has been this season, since his return, you would never know he felt this way. The Welshman has started 11 matches and has gone on to score seven and assist one in this League Two campaign.

Last time out Mullin was able to register a hat trick against Morecambe and arguably could had more. Although he had a good start to the year before that, this cemented the thoughts that he is back to his best.

Here’s to hoping that he can play without pain in the coming weeks and he can maintain his best form in League Two.
