Wrexham produced a summer transfer window that fans will never forget.

When Wrexham were promoted to the Championship, there was an expectation that Phil Parkinson would have to add some more quality to his squad.

However, nobody could have foreseen the Red Dragons spending almost £40m on thirteen new additions with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney smashing their transfer record on three separate occasions.

With a number of notable departures too, there has been a lot to unpick from Wrexham’s window and Wrexham Insider has analysed five things we can take away from a summer of chaos at the Racecourse Ground.

Five things learned from Wrexham’s summer transfer window

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney change stance on Premier League ambition

Wrexham’s owners vowed to be ‘aggressive’ at the start of the transfer window and they kept to that promise by really backing Parkinson in the market.

The owners have made no secret about their plan to reach the Premier League, however, there was a significant change to that plan during the summer window.

Originally, there had been no timeframe placed on achieving the remarkable feat, more of a dream, something to wish for in a fairy tale ending.

Reynolds and McElhenney have now placed a 2027 target on the Premier League and are doing everything they can in terms of recruitment to get the Red Dragons into the elite of English football.

Phil Parkinson shows no sentiment in Wrexham transfer decisions

Wrexham’s rapid progression has captured the imagination of the footballing world around the globe, let alone the town.

With the rise in quality they will face this season, it has sadly meant that supporters have had to wave goodbye to some of their heroes.

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer were exiled last season and departed North Wales, alongside a number of players who had played significant roles in helping Wrexham reach the second tier.

Parkinson has shown his ruthless nature before and it certainly reared its head this summer. Unfortunately, it’s a necessary part of keeping the club moving through the divisions.

Wrexham change transfer stance with younger profiles

Parkinson has very much targeted experienced players to help get his Wrexham side out of the National League and so on.

Signings such as James McClean and Steven Fletcher were designed to deliver instant success with no thought given about sell-on value or player progression.

This summer has seen a shift towards the Red Dragons building a squad that can have a level of consistency for the next few seasons.

Callum Doyle was signed at the age of 21, Liberato Cacace is just 24 and there is a sense that Parkinson is now looking more towards the long-term benefits of players.

Wrexham complete first loan signing since Arthur Okonkwo

Parkinson has shown a reluctance to explore the loan market during his reign as Wrexham boss with Arthur Okonkwo the only temporary acquisition before this summer.

However, it is understood Wrexham were exploring a number of loan moves for young Premier League talents before eventually completing a move for Issa Kabore.

Kabore has joined on a season-long loan deal and will bring his energy and enthusiasm down the right flank.

Wrexham get a player that is keen to impress and make a name for himself and whilst he may not sign on a permanent basis, the Red Dragons can still benefit from his development this campaign.

Nathan Broadhead transfer fee may not reflect Wrexham squad status

Nathan Broadhead became Wrexham’s club-record signing joining from Ipswich Town in a deal that could rise to £10m.

However, the forward’s transfer fee may not necessarily reflect his role in the Wrexham squad with fellow acquisitions holding more importance to Parkinson.

The likes of Lewis O’Brien and Kieffer Moore cost significantly less than Broadhead but have already had a huge impact this season.

Patience will be key for the new signings to gel together, however, Wrexham fans will already be seeing those who are likely to be the key players.
