Forgotten Wrexham ace surely heading for the exit door as Phil Parkinson stance becomes very clear

Wrexham’s pre-season has been one of success, but for one player, it has only heightened his chances of being shown the exit door.

Ahead of their Wrex Coast tour of the United States, Wrexham signed five new players, including Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt, George Dobson, Sebastian Revan and Callum Burton.

The Reds were impressive with their business in the market and translated such positivity across to the US, where they’ve held Premier League sides Bournemouth and Chelsea while thrashing Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1.

Several players who didn’t play much towards the end of last season, including Sam Dalby, Jordan Davies and James Jones, have used these assignments as opportunities to impress Phil Parkinson.

Davies has done so prolifically by scoring against Hanley Town and the Whitecaps while similar can’t be said for striker Billy Waters.

Billy Waters played no minutes for Wrexham on their US tour

Pre-season is an opportunity for the fringe players to showcase their worth ahead of the new campaign.

Unfortunately, this isn’t a narrative that has transpired for Waters.

The 29-year-old has only made eight appearances for the club since arriving from Barrow in March 2023 as an emergency backup to Paul Mullin.

Last season, Waters was even loaned out to Doncaster Rovers due to a lack of game time but failed to score in any of his 11 appearances in League Two.

Upon returning to the Racecourse Ground, the chances of him resurrecting his career have lessened significantly as the Englishman didn’t feature for a single minute on their Wrex Coast tour.

It therefore shows that Parkinson doesn’t see him as a part of his plans moving forward and with his contract expiring in 2025, would ideally like to sell him this summer.

Wrexham could struggle to offload Billy Waters

For Parkinson to bring in another striker, it feels necessary for him to offload one or two of his current options and Waters is at the summit of that list.

The former Cheltenham Town striker has seen his stock decrease dramatically due to a lack of game time.

Following a less-than-impressive five-month spell at Doncaster from January onwards, clubs in League Two may be put off signing Waters.

Indeed, Wrexham could find it difficult to offload the out-of-favour striker and instead may need to bank on a National League side coming in for him.

He’s previously scored 34 goals in 108 appearances in the fifth tier, compared to 29 in 157 League Two outings, performing significantly better in Non-League.
