Former Wrexham flop is the answer to Phil Parkinson’s prayers, forget Lewis O’Brien

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson will be keen to add goalscoring firepower to his ranks, and there is a clear solution to the problem.

Wrexham have undergone changes in the attacking department since the conclusion of the 2024/25 League One promotion-winning campaign.

Notably, Wrexham have let Paul Mullin join Wigan Athletic, with the forward not being a part of Phil Parkinson’s short-term plans for the 2025/26 Championship season.

As well as Mullin, Steven Fletcher has departed Wrexham permanently after his contract concluded –  a decision by the club that sparked controversy, with the Scotsman not finding out until the announcement.

Signings have been made to plug the gaps left by outgoings, with Ryan Hardie joining Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle, but ultimately, there is still plenty more to do in the attacking department.

Wrexham’s priority appears to be on splashing the cash on a midfielder, with Lewis O’Brien a top target for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney; however, a vast change of direction should be pursued, one that could take them to a former Red Dragons flop.

Wrexham should turn to former player Davis Keillor-Dunn as Phil Parkinson’s blockbuster signing

This summer, Wrexham are looking to spend a surplus of £5million to attain the services of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien, however, the Red Dragons are struggling to meet an agreement regarding the Englishman’s wages.

Not only should Wrexham move on from O’Brien, but the entire midfield department should be re-evaluated due to the excess of options that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could target in the free agent market.

Spending seven figures on a player should be saved for the cream of the crop, and as a result, this financial power that the club holds should be instead directed towards looking into signing Davis Keillor-Dunn from League One side Barnsley.

Despite struggling to notch a significant amount of game time in a previous spell at Wrexham, where he played just six games, scoring one goal, he has rejuvenated his career, to the point where he would be a perfect option for Reynolds and McElhenney to bring to the club.

What Davis Keillor-Dunn could offer Phil Parkinson

In the 2024/25 League One season, the “Mackem Messi”, as Barnsley fans colloquially refer to him, notched 19 goals in 44 games. One of these included a sweet right-footed strike at Oakwell Stadium against Wrexham, which saw Phil Parkinson’s side fall to a 2-1 defeat on the road.

Keillor-Dunn possesses a brilliant goalscoring prowess, something that Parkinson will be crying out for this season, especially with Mullin departing the club on a temporary basis.

Wrexham need a guarantee of goals next season, and whilst Keillor-Dunn could cost as much as £5million, he would be a better use of Reynolds and McElhenney’s cash ahead of the 2025/26 Championship season.
