Phil Parkinson could deploy Wrexham transfer target in a surprising position – it’ll fix a big issue

The January transfer window has been open for less than a week but Wrexham have already been linked with several players.

The Welsh outfit splashed the cash over the summer, breaking their transfer record twice in the space of a few weeks to sign Ollie Rathbone and then Modou Faal from West Bromwich Albion for £590,000.

Wrexham have continued to reinforce their squad in the following months, signing three free agents, one of whom, Matty James, has earned himself a new contract until the end of 2024/25.

With the January window now open, however, the Red Dragons are once again looking to add to their first-team squad.

Patrick Bamford was linked to Wrexham in December but he’s likely to be too expensive for the League One side.

More recently, reports have claimed that the Red Dragons are interested in Ryan Hardie but he’ll come with a £2m release clause.

Now, another name has been linked and could solve a major problem Phil Parkinson currently has at Wrexham.

Wrexham need to sign cover for Elliot Lee

As is evident by all the transfer links, the American-owned club want to sign a number nine in January.

A new striker should be a priority, especially when looking at Paul Mullin’s Wrexham decline in 2024/25.

However, some form of cover for Elliot Lee must be considered by the club in the January transfer window.

Lee is one of Wrexham’s most important players but when he’s not fit or playing up front, they have no decent cover for him in the number 10 role.

Ollie Rathbone and George Dobson have both had stints as the most advanced midfielder in Parkinon’s three-man setup this term but neither have excelled in that role, with the club much weaker creatively when Lee’s not starting.

However, Wrexham have been linked with Cauley Woodrow this week and he could prove to be an unorthodox solution to the Lee problem.

Phil Parkinson could deploy Wrexham target Cauley Woodrow as a 10

Woodrow has featured for current club Luton Town on 12 occasions in the Championship this season.

All of those outings have seen him deployed in his natural centre-forward role.

However, speaking back in January 2023, Hatters boss Rob Edwards gave a glowing review of the Wrexham target, in which he confirmed Woodrow can play as a 10.

He said: “Cauley’s a brilliant footballer, he’s really intelligent, we can play him as a nine, a 10, someone who actually plays a little bit in midfield as well as an attacking midfielder but I don’t want to do that too much.”

While not the perfect Lee cover, the signing of Woodrow could solve that problem while, hopefully, adding some goals to their frontline as well.
