Phil Parkinson faces new Wrexham selection dilemma as ‘tremendous’ player shines despite defeat

The performance of one Wrexham player against Sheffield United has provided Phil Parkinson with a selection headache ahead of the trip to Bolton Wanderers.

Wrexham crashed out of the Carabao Cup after losing 4-2 against Sheffield United.

Phil Parkinson was proud of his team’s performance but was left seething at the decision to allow Auston Trusty’s first-half goal, with the referee apologising for the mistake at half-time.

The Reds did take a lead in the contest as Will Boyle scored his fourth goal for Wrexham, slamming home the ball after debutant Dan Scarr nodded it down.

The visitors were then pegged back four times as the tie drifted away from them before Sebastian Revan rifled home a consolation, with the 21-year-old starring on his full competitive debut.

Sebastian Revan’s performance against Sheffield United

Captain James McClean was the only survivor from the starting XI that beat Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 on Saturday.

The 35-year-old started as a left wing-back in that win over the Chair Boys however, against the Blades, he was moved into midfield while Revan slotted in on the left.

Revan gave an excellent account of himself against Championship opposition as the youngster was a constant threat down the left wing, utilising his searing pace to trouble the hosts’ back line.

When given an opportunity, the Aston Villa academy graduate wasn’t afraid of making piercing runs, with Parkinson praising Revan’s all-action, attacking display.

Although Wrexham lost on the night, his performance was topped off by scoring a well-taken goal as he rifled the ball emphatically past Ivo Grbic in the United goal.

It was a goal he deserved after coming agonisingly close to netting in the first half when a Callum Burton long ball found him racing in behind before his right-footed effort crept just wide of the post.

Phil Parkinson’s selection dilemma ahead of Bolton clash

Revan was ‘tremendous’ at Bramall Lane and was inarguably Wrexham’s best player on the pitch as he offered such a threat going forward.

The only downside to Revan playing well is that it now presents Parkinson with a selection headache. Realistically, he isn’t going to drop captain McClean from the starting XI; it’s just whether he plays as a midfielder or left wing-back.

Parkinson started with a midfield of George Dobson, Andy Cannon and Elliot Lee against Wycombe, while all three dropped to the bench last night.

Following that performance last weekend, it’s difficult to see any of that trio being left out against Bolton on Sunday, which means McClean could continue on the left.

On the flip side, the Wrexham boss could find the prospect of picking Revan irresistible, who ultimately deserves a starting place after impressing against Championship opposition.
