Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson once spoke about the ‘biggest disappointment’ of his career, and he will face the side he endured it with this season.

Wrexham are preparing for the 2025/26 Championship season, with there being hope that they can build on their three successive promotions from the National League to the second tier.

Under the stewardship of Phil Parkinson, Wrexham have gone from strength to strength in recent years, not just because of the quality of players that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have brought in, but also the levels that the Red Dragons boss has demanded of his ranks.

It has been nothing but success for Parkinson at Wrexham, but that hasn’t always been the case for the boss elsewhere in his career. In just his second managerial stint, he endured a short spell at a Championship club that proved to be “the biggest disappointment of his career”.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson once spoke about ‘difficult’ time managing Hull City

One low point of Parkinson’s career took place back in 2006 when, after taking over at Hull City, he struggled with the Championship side, recording an average of 0.96 points per game before his dismissal after just 24 matches.

In comparison, Wrexham have recorded an average of 2.04 points per game, over double what he was able to achieve with the Tigers.

Parkinson reflected on that stage in his career and why it was ‘difficult’ for him personally.

“It feels like a long time ago now,” Parkinson said to the Hull Daily Mail. “I’ve said before that it was a difficult squad to take over. The club had just stayed up the year before and there was a bit of second-season syndrome in the Championship.

“It was a difficult situation at the time because the club needed a rebuild. Looking back I’d probably do one or two things differently.”

This season, Wrexham and Parkinson will visit his old stomping ground, the MKM Stadium, where he will certainly wish to put his bad memories of Hull behind him with a victory at their ground.

Phil Parkinson has learned from ‘difficult situation’ at Hull City

Nearly 20 years on from his short, yet troubled spell at Hull City, it is magnificent how much Phil Parkinson has come on as a coach.

Just like he had to put up with the second-season syndrome in the Championship, Parkinson has had to deal with constant pressure on his shoulders in his role at Wrexham because of the millions of onlookers supporting the club.

Not only has Parkinson learned how to deal with such difficult situations, but his experience is now paramount to ensuring that players have the best mentality going into a game or season, something that has been crucial to Wrexham’s success.
